And I say DS/DSi because DS vs. PSP is no contest. Like console wars, but with handhelds.
The DS, like the Wii, brings a whole new aspect of video games to the market; this time touch. It also has two screens. Game companies actually take advantage of those two aspects; putting something unimportant on the bottom screen that doesn't have room on one screen. They just can't do that on the PSP, and end up cluttering up the screen.
The PSP has the obvious quality advantage, with 32MB of RAM (64 on the Slim, Brite and Go), compared to the DS's (pitiful) 4MB, and the DSi's 16MB. The PSP is even 128-bit, so that's like comparing the GameCube to the N64, when we're talking about bit rate and stuff.
The PSP seems more prone to damage than the DS, however. The screen isn't protected by plastic, and it uses discs, which, if you haven't noticed, are much more fragile than cartridges.
On the topic of discs and carts, with discs you have to have all of the save data on the system memory. Not only can you fill up the memory with save data, but if you break your PSP and get another, you've just lost all of your data.
Other notable things about each system include:
Savestates on PSP
Older PlayStation emulators on PSP
Microphone on DS
Hinge on DS, can also be used to protect screens
Sleep Mode on DS
I have an incarnation of every DS, and two PSPs [Xp3000 and GO], and I love them all. n.n
Each system has it's own little quirks, but I don't love either more than the others.
I even switch it up sometimes and play SS on my old clunky Teal DS. xD;
But honestly, if I had to chose, it's the DSi XL. It's just so darn purty. It's like a little tiny laptop. c:
That, and it's SD memory. xD; Gotta love being able to jack your stereo into an XL and crank tunes offa it.
On the topic of handhelds, I'm more of a fan of the DS for the interactivity, and games.
However, the PSP isn't worthless, it has a good class of graphics (however, the 3DS is sure to outclass that) and a good handful of games that I honestly wish showed their heads on larger consoles more often.
Now, the only handheld I don't like, is the PSP Go, only because I don't like having to rebuy all of my games in a digital version. Personally I really like physically owning a cartridge or disc, because it's personal property as such. With digital downloads, if you read the claims and law st00f, you can actually note the fact that you are not an owner of it, but only a 'licenser', meaning at any time, the company has full right to take away your ownership privileges.
...
The PSP isn't a video game console, it's... a... It's an iPod with buttons.
Now, before you go and tell me "OMG U NUB FRGOT ABOOT DSI SOUND LOLOLLOL" That's a SOUND TOY. Not a music player. And the camera is an image manipulation toy.
The point is, Nintendo is purely games. Even when they throw these add-ons in, they're still thinking about potential gaming applications. And the only thing a DSi can't do that a PSP can is play movies. That's about it.
Char, that post is incredibly stupid and biased. 358/2 Days is a DS game for one, and on top of that one exclusive game does not a good console make.
For the record the PSPGo is probably the worst decision Sony ever made with their handheld line- it's entirely digital media and you can't redeem the games you physically own, so you end up wasting more money than you did beforehand with your PSP.

First of all, ^. Second, 358 was a very meh-ish game. If I need to put out another reason (not including the games), it would be the PSP for internet acess and DS for it being Nintendo. Usually, though I play my PSP more then my DS though. Anyways, if I had to choose, DS for when I feel like playing the DS and PSP for it's games and internet acess. Overall, I say it's a tie....
