I've been trying to record some stuff with CamStudio, but I can't find a good way of recording sound. The only way I've found to work so far is to plug the headphone socket in to the microphone socket, but the sound quality is awful. I want to use Stereo Mix to record the sound, but it's not working. I've tried using it, but it doesn't pick up any sound. Yes, it's enabled, and yes, I have it selected on CamStudio. In the Control Panel>Sound>Recording Devices window, there's a scale next to Sound Mix, but it doesn't go up, no matter what. Any ideas?

I'm running Vista with Realtek HD audio.

Try right clicking on the sound icon in the system tray, selecting "playback devices" and enabling it by right clicking. I forget if it's under Playback or Recording, but you'll most likely find it.

EDIT: It's in Recording, and you have to right click in the empty space and choose "Show disabled devices"

I have found it and enabled it. I'm saying that it doesn't pick up and sound.

Just an idea.

You could use Audiocity to record the audio, then you could splice the Audio and the Video together in Windows Movie Maker.

I have the exact same problem on Windows 7 with Realtek HD audio. Just to let you know you're not alone. Will report back if I find a solution, hope you will as well..

Edit: OK I have tried everything... old versions, new versions, every type of setting. No luck. Found a intermediate (?) solution with another software. It doesn't care about recording inputs and mixers. I think it just taps into the windows application layer.

WM Capture 4.0 shareware with trial downloads (2 min recording @ 30 days)

I tried that demo on youtube and it worked.. no need to download any codecs or go through many settings. Still I prefer Camstudio controls and just hope a new camstudio can add this capability one day. Got the idea from this forum. where they talk alot about this problem.

One problem with that. Audacity uses Stereo Mix to record it's sound.

Glad you found a workaround still I believe it can be fixed. I suggest you rightclick the stereo mix and set it as default recording device. Then, go to its properties and check its volume. Make sure it isn't muted and has a volume higher than 0. Furthermore, perform the same volume check on your Playback Devices tab by rightclicking your device and checking the volumes tab.

Nope. I've already tried everything, I swear. No dice.
