...Actually, this isn't a good thing. 900 (or more) of those users are all spam bots originating from different IPs. If they keep coming, they could bring down the entire server.

Well, yes, I'm fairly pessimistic. However, there is a real danger in this one. Fortunately, it was just a matter of about a 1000 users viewing some page in the chat archives all at once, then nothing more (their random IPization still confuses me). The count will drop back down to about 30 all at once in a few minutes.

I hate those stupid bots. They mess with the real number, which is somewhere around 320.

Isn't there some online blacklist of known bot IPs that we can use to cut it down?

Once, when I was at the forums' main page, I saw "(32 viewing)" besides the Announcements forum. I clicked on "Who's Online", and there were only 7 online members. The others were either guests and/or bots.

Alright, I discussed with FreezeWarp and he tipped me to disable chatroom archive viewing for guests. It apparently has already helped significantly. (Spambots/DDoS bots may be checking for new content, waiting for keywords/usernames, or just being poorly programmed.)

The 320 thing happened on the day before HgSs release when I announced that party.

If you look at what they're viewing, the vast majority of them are sifting through the Chat Box archives, probably getting lost in all of the new posts.
