Pokémon General → HM Servants... Or Slaves?

Well, we were sort of talking about this in my "Which Strategy Do You Use?" thread.

HM slaves or servants (Whatever you prefer to call them ) are those Pokemon who can learn most HMs, and we use them in are parties just so that we have a Pokemon that knows the HMs, and that Pokemon is not usually used in battle.

My current HM slave in Platinum is Buneary, and other Pokmeon that I have used as slaves are Bidoof and Bibarel.

So, I'd like to know... Who's your HM slave?

In Yellow I used an oddish.
In Gold and Crystal I used a sandshrew.
In Ruby and Emeral I used Zigzagoon, Linoone, and Wailmer.
In Diamond I use Bidoof Bibarell and a Starly.
In Platinum I use a Bidoof Tropius and Bibarel.

^ You're good at remembering! O_O

By the way, does anyone else teach their starter Surf if they picked the Water type starter? I do, sometimes.

Ya I usually teach my starter Surf but if I use Feralgtr in HG I'll probably teach it waterfall instead.

The only useful HM's that are useful in battles for certain Pokemon are strength (for normal types) and Surf (for special attacking water types).

It's a good thing we have access to Pokemon who can learn HM's. Otherwise, I think Nintendo (or Gamefreak) would receive hate mail for making Pokemon frustrating.

^ Strength always seems like a crappy in-battle attack for me, but Surf always does good things.

I've always shrugged off on using strength on my main poke, since return is better for "generic nuetral damage" =w= And hey what about waterfall? D:

A Bibarel named Slave is a good Bibarel. If I have a water-type starter I teach it Surf. I sometimes teach one Strength, but it feels like shoving a puzzle piece where it doesn't belong. ^-^

Surf and Waterfall are really the only good HMs in my opinion, because Return outclasses Strength COMPLETELY.

I never really have an HM Slave always in my party, I just bring one in when the time arises (like going through caves).

I sure am glad Defog isn't an HM in HG and SS. ;O

2. I teach my main pokemon most of the HMs (I don't teach them defog or flash or that stuff)
3. I don't have HM slaves

My current HM slave is actually a Poliwhirl. It can learn a good number of the key DPPt HMs. I chose it for Rock Climb, Strength, Rock Smash, and Waterfall. In keeping with the theme, I have it hold the Iron Ball item.

Oops, forgot about that one. That one is best for Floatzel. :3

I know return in definitely better, but without access to it (either in the older games or before being able to get the TM), Strength is decent for the time being.

I'm not saying to keep it by any means. A quick stop by the move deleter goes a long way when you're done with the "puzzle" portions of Pokemon.

I'm just saying if you're "forced" to use HM's on your main Pokemon, Strength, Surf, and Waterfall are reliable for a short time.

Haha, Defog is probably the worst in-battle HM to date. xD

What does the Iron Ball do?

What does the Iron Ball do?
It forces the Pokémon to go second when it moves, regardless of speed. In this case, I'm using it as a ball and chain.

Both in Diamond and Platinum, Bibarel was my slave, and Starly is the flyer while Empoleon is a Surfer.

In HG, I have planned to use 6 out of 8 HM on the main Pokemon of the team. The other two, Rock Climb and Waterfall are left for random Pokemon.

In Platinum, I put Surf, Fly and Strength on my team members, besides using Bibarel as a HM slave. Defog, the remaining HM, was left on a random Pokémon.
In SoulSilver, I have decided to use Furret as my HM slave. 3 other HMs are going to be on my team members, while the remaining one will be put on a random Pokémon.

Even your HM slave? Wow.

I'm probably just going to play Crystal for a little bit to get prepared, that's all.

In my old game I used Azumarill for nearly everything and Pelliper for flying. I used Graveler for Diamond, and I have a Weavile for Cut/False Swipe

I don't actually have an HM slave in particular. I make sure all my party members can use the HMs I teach them effectively. I used to do that though, I had a Bibarel for stuff like that.

I definitely call them HM Slaves, just because it sounds bad!

My HM Slave for Blue is a Slowpoke named "YessaMassa." Its moves are Surf, Strength, Flash, and Dig. I also have a Farfetch'd that knows Fly and Cut; it's the one named "Dux" that you can trade for in Vermilion City.

The first time I played the game I distributed the HMs across my team. This time around, I know better.

In Pt. I used a Bibarell as my HM slave and if I can get to trade one over to SoulSilver, then i'll send myself a Bidoof and continue the tradition. :3

Otherwise i'll just have to find something that can use Whirlpool, Flash, Cut, and Possibly Strength...If they do the 10th Anniversary Event early...maybe a Mew just for the lulz.

If I even had one Mew I definitely wouldn't teach it HM's, that's for sure!

Well, by the Mew thing, I meant like if you could get the 10th Anniversary on HGSS launch date and i'd worry about getting actual moves on it when I got an uber team together. :3

I've been using Machamp lately, one with No Guard. Rock Climb, Strength, Rock Smash. Then I just catch a Pelipper, and teach it all the flying-based moves, like Defog. Ugh, Defog.

I've given this considerable thought, and on platinum:

Aerodactyle@amulet coin
-Fly
-Defog
-Strength
-Rock Smash

Bibarel@Luck incense
-Surf
-Waterfall
-cut
-Rock Climb

This way, if the time comes where I must use a revive, why not double the prize money with a sacrificial offering to the opposition?

In HG/SS Ill pick up a linoone sooner or later, simply for the added pickup ability.

Currently in HGSS, I had to turn Red Gyarados into it

I hate how you need nearly EVERY HM to get through Route 27/Victory Road.

And this sadly isn't in the day where moves like Cut and Strength were actually GOOD.

My HG HM slave is Snorlax, but he's actually a pretty good fighter, specifically in the Battle Frontier. Rock Smash (when supereffective) and Rock Climb can do some pretty nice damage.
