I've found an interesting fact about the Pokémon Professors in the main animé regions (excluding the Orange Islands). I only realized this today, so I guess several others might have found this out before me.
Here's what I found:
All the professors in the main Pokémon regions - Oak, Elm, Birch and Rowan - have names based on trees. Now here's the interesting part: According to Wikipedia, all of those 4 types of trees are found in Canada. To make sure, press Ctrl+F, then type each of the four tree names. You will find them all on the page.
Do you think this is a coincidence? Or do you think it was intended? What could be a possible explanation of this?
That leads me to this tid-bit of information...

That explains the name of Ash's rival for you.

I'm almost certain it's a coincidence. Isn't Canada known for its lumber industry? I would expect it to have a lot of trees, then.

Correct. I don't see any particular reason for them to have singled out Canada. It should also be noted that their Japanese names, while still obeying the pattern of using trees, usually do not reference the same trees as their English names.

...Birch. Her name's May Birch. Gary/Blue/Shigeru/Green (if you want to be technical) doesn't have a sister beyond Daisy. Possibly a reference to maple trees, which, quite humourously, are the national emblems of Canada.
