Starting today, many people who are using Windows 7 or 8.1 computers should start seeing a funny icon in the notification area of their taskbars. Specifically, yet another Windows icon.

That's the upgrade reservation for Windows 10, and you'll have to reserve it, whatever it means, to apparently guarantee that you'll get it no matter what happens.

I haven't seen it appear on my laptop, but they sure showed up in my parents' laptops, though. What about you guys?

Refer to this Windows blog post for more information.

I don't see the icon, is it part of one of the Windows updates? Because I haven't seen it yet :/

They aren't giving it to everyone immediately, might take a few days. My home desktop didn't get it yet, but one of my two Windows desktops at work got it.

I saw the icon on Sunday night and promptly reserved my upgrade. I can't wait for July 29th.

Same here, but I reserved mine a couple of days ago.

It's coming, July 29th. I'm pretty sure I can wait that long.

Thank you, finally got it to appear on my desktop now. It was the only system that didn't get it.

I'm going to wait a little bit to reserve it though, I want to know how the serial keys are going to work. The Windows 10 copy we are given is OEM so supposedly won't work if you swap hardware (like motherboard or new installation on new harddrive).

Just the motherboard swap, or multiple changes in a single go should pose problems. Installing it on a new drive, or swapping the graphics card, for example, shouldn't cause any issues, and in these cases, you can try giving the old phone line a try.

Apparently some people thought in order to install Windows 10 after pre odering they needed to go on website to install it however this turned to be a scam virus.

Another suggestion is to manually run Windows Update if you don't have your computer set to install updates automatically. When I ran it on my laptop, I got the notification.

In fact, the helper batch file is supposed to be used only after you've run all possible updates.

Interesting.

I just restored my laptop again using the OEM image, and after doing all Windows Updates, the reservation notification just popped up without any intervention.

Nice.

I wonder how much more different it will be from windows 8... from what I saw it just looked like it was fixing a few things, not an entirely different new upgrade.

It's pretty much a response to many of the complaints Windows 8 received, as well as an alignment of their different systems (desktops, laptops, tablets, Windows Phone, and Xbox).

Here's a list of some things that have been removed (published in February):
