I literally cannot express how excited I am about the news.
I hope it turns out to be a good game so that it rounds off the year in the most fantastic way.
EDIT: I don't know why, but I just thought of something:
I've read somewhere that Nintendo is planning to develop/has started developing a new hand-held console with greater powers than the Nintendo DS. Could it be that the Nintendo company is releasing many Pokémon games within a somewhat short time to keep the fans busy while they complete their project or something?
I know it sounds very odd, but I thought it made a slight bit of sense, seeing as how I can't find any other appropriate reason.
I'm excited, but also dreadful about the possibility for them to botch the game. The last games haven't been bad, but there are a lot of things people want, and I'm curious which will be added (3D battles and 3D-360 degree landscape are two for me). Its also possible they'll just try too much, too little, etc, or botch the Pokémon (the 4th gen Pokémon seemed a little... weird).
Just the same, I'm quite excited for more news, if not the game itself.
As for Shadow's theory, that seem's rather possible. The DS seems to be nearing the end of its cycle, as is the Wii, Xbox 360, and PS3, so I am curious.
A new engine is definitely an exciting prospect, as will be the host of new features/Pokémon that will be added, but I can't help but think that this is happening way too soon. After all, Game Freak is working with the exact same hardware that supported D/P, and the graphics and sound capabilities are already being more or less fully utilized. It would probably come down to just adding more *things* rather than making blanket improvements to the graphics/sound/effects/etc., which I'm not sure is the right way to go presently.
And since this is the first generation that I'll be both anticipating AND regularly checking a forum for, I'm going to need to devise a approach to dealing with the spoilers that will inevitably crop up--either to accept them or attempt to avoid them as much as possible.
This is something I posted on another site.

Oh boy a fifth generation how exciting! They had better give lots of pokemon more evolution patterns, unlike Generation 3. After all, I can't think of any animals to base any more pokemon on! :O

It's already been done. Have an Arceus hold a Sky Plate to make it pure a Flying Type.
