It's a great high-end graphics card. Even though it's a generation old, it should serve you very well - plays almost all games at at least high settings. It probably smokes the HD 3000 in my laptop by over ten times. (For comparison's sake, the 9800 GTX+, which is around 3-4 years old at this point, is around 3-4 times as fast as the chip in my laptop)
Do you have a power supply that is reliable and beefy enough, though? These kind of cards need auxiliary power.
Seems pretty solid. It's not too old and was one of the best at the time, so it should be able to handle modern applications well and should do nicely for what you need.
(Just avoid the media buzzwords that they try to drown customers in when buying computer parts.
