What foreign language are you committed to in your high school/university elective? Why? If you have time for another language, or you regret your current one, which language would you choose?

I chose to learn Japanese not only because of anime, I found some other good reasons:
1. European languages like French and Spanish have complicated and possibly irregular grammar, especially verb inflections
2. I am forgetting how to write Chinese by hand and learning kanji counteracts this
3. Foundation from Chinese knowledge

I took a year of French in 8th Grade, but after 2 years in Italian, it's my current focus. Next is Japanese, and I might get back to French.

I chose Japanese because I figured that I'd need to engage more with the language, especially with my necessity to translate Japanese text for news and such.

Unlike you guys, I chose English. My first language is Arabic, but since Grade 2, I started taking English and Arabic as first languages, so now I am as fluent in English as in Arabic.

I did Spanish once but I can't remember much of it any more... I'll also be taking French next year.

I'm taking Italian. It and Spanish are practically the same.

I took Japanese because I figured it would help me the most in the career I wish to get into in the future.

I took Latin in high school. Teacher made it fun so it wasn't too bad.

I regret not getting more invested in French while I was in school, So I'm going try to pick it up some other time. I'm also going to try picking up German for just no reason.

I thought French is a major and important language in Canada, like a first language, isn't it?

It is, but I decided to not really get to invested in the classes, around Grade 8 I lost interest and then at 9 just stopped taking the class overall. It's something I do regret. As for the class being mandatory, they are making it optional now. Which in my opinion I don't like.

Yeah my thoughts are messed up aren't they...

For the past 4 years, I've been taking Spanish in my late middle school years up until now. I will be taking AP Spanish next year (Kinda scared of how hard it will be ). I really like taking Spanish, since Foreign Language is one of my strong academic points, but I think the teacher could be better.

Awww yeah.

Having lived in Berlin for four years I have learned German for just as long, although I did have two years of Spanish. I don't know how much it stuck, though, since I can't remember much of it. I'll be taking German next year as well which will make it five years once I finish High School.

I've always had a little bit of interest in Japanese, so when I got a chance to take it in high school, I did. Like Quad said, I feel it'll help me on the career path I'd like to take. Not only that, but I figured that as I continued on in higher education, I'd probably meet more people that have the same interests as me, and I did.

I took the required minimum of credits for spanish in high school as my only foreign language so far. For me, learning a new language is torture. :<

I barely even passed my spanish credits despite studying hard. I'm lucky to have passed them. It didn't help that I had a bad spanish teacher on more than one occasion.

I finished Level 3 French this year, been taking it since Grade 3 or so, and I really enjoy speaking it. Self-taught in Japanese, probably going to work on the writing component when I get some time. Fluent in English, and the ones I'll be going after soon will probably be Latin and Spanish.
