With less than 70 days for the release of the English release of HeartGold and SoulSilver, many speculations come up in our minds, one of them is Kotone's English name. Many people call her "big head" or "big cat", but c'mon! there must be a true name.

I think she will be called "Soul". What about you?

What about the episode with her? Once it's dubbed in English, we may have it.

That's true, but it isn't bad to discuss about her future name.

That's a tough question. Big head seems to fit her appearance XP

I agree that she'll be called Soul, but that depends on the male characters name. Though a male called Heart would be weird
Maybe she'll be called Silver.

Male hero: Gold
Rival: Silver
Female her: Heart/Soul (I find Soul more girly.)

Kotone means, musical note or something like that so it will probably be Melody or Harmony.

Leaf wasn't named Green in the game canon. She was named Leaf. Thus, Kotone might be called Soul. I think something fitting a literal translation of her name might also be possible.

They usually never use "game names" if the character is AN NPC like May and Brendan would have been named Ruby and Saphire

They've actually only been doing that since third generation (using real names) and Gold is still Gold. Kotone can still be Soul, Heart, or even Krystal if Nintendo's feeling lazy. Silver isn't an option since that's the name of the rival, and a translation into something that would be closer to Kotone in English would also fit. But it might not be direct or literal. (i.e Dawn = time of day when sun rises, Hikari = light, two slightly related terms that don't directly translate into the same thing)

Hmm, this is an interesting topic. I could see anything from Soul to Meoldy, so there are many different possibilities for names here.

They could use Kris again. That'd be lame, but they might.

I don't think so, as Kotone is a different character.
I think Crystal is a good name as both of Gold and Silver are jewels, therefore, Crystal is suitable.

Or perhaps something entirely different, just, at random?

Melody seems to be a nice fit to match Kotone (being 'Musical Note'). There are many possibilities. LiteTheIronMan has a point, it could be indirect or literal

I bet it'll be something completely random off the wall

like Katie or something.

Her name in the Manga is Soul, but, ironically, in-game rivals always seem to be named off of their anime name instead (May and Brent in RSE, Dawn and Lucas in DPP). Then again, did Brent or Lucas ever appear in the anime? I know Soul already has, but there's no dub yet.

By the way... What's the name of Gold going to be? His name in the manga was Gold, but I don't think he ever appeared in the Anime (except as Jimmy), and his name never defaulted. That's what different here, the names all have to default; you can't choose them.

Additional Notes:
1. Silver still won't have a translated name; we can name him.
2. Were Dawn and May not chosen, and we went with the Manga pattern (which is how the games themselves are named), they would instead be named Lady Beryl and Sapphire.

What manga?

Next week her name will be revealed because she'll be in the anime.

Ok, there you have it. It makes no sense according to the context of the game (Leaf, the first portion of the game's title, to Lyra, a music-related term that has nothing to do with the game), but it makes sense anyways.

Case closed.

Props go to Serebii for posting this info on their site, and OMGITSJAD for linking it to some of us on ***** and such.

What kind of name is Lyra?

I have given up my faith in PUSA choosing real names I mean Lyra doesn't even mean anything.

Oh dear. You've prompted me to Wiki Lyra.

Okay, so Lyra is a corruption of lyre, based on the same-named constellation. Let's Wiki lyre.

The fingers of the free hand silenced the unwanted strings in the chord. The lyre is similar in appearance to a small harp, but with certain distinct differences.
Now, let's Bulba Kotone.

What's this? A chart translating Kotone's name...

Embedded image

Kotone's name translated to an onomontapeia for the pluck of a harp.

There! Names Annotated!

So, it does make sense, it's just not something we'd expect.

Some of the new names for other places and characters have been revealed. (EDIT: This is a leak and as such is not confirmed)

A few of them are disappointing in my opinion, especially the Rocket Executive names, as now only half of them (as opposed to all in the originals) have the names of real-life rockets, to my knowledge. Also, Sinjoh ruins just sounds... wrong to me.

I agree. Sinjoh sounds terrible and weird for some reason. I understand that they wanted to combine Sinnoh and Johto, but...they should have just made another name; Sinohto maybe.

...Hmmm...Okay. Ethan's passable.

As for the Rocket names? I prefer them over the Japanese names.

And "Proton" doesn't?

At any rate, I'm pretty sure the names for the Rocket execs are supposed to be codenames anyway. I don't see anyone naming their kids any of these things except Arianna.

Arianna is the only normal name. No comment.

Lyra sounds natural. Soul honestly doesn't sound like a name. Lyra does.
