This month, after the Brawl tourney completes, we'll be having a Mario Kart Wii tournament, run by Yoshi648. We can use this topic to discuss the rules of this tournament, such as number of people in each race, which maps to use, and number of laps.
Last Edited 1/7/10
Current Rules:
1. 4-Player race
2. May select any course, but can't race on the same course twice per round.
3. No Hacking / Performing glitches to give a quick win
4. Any control scheme you want (Wii Wheel/Wiimote on side, Wiimote+Nunchuck, Classic Controller or GameCube controller)
5. Karts and Motorcycles allowed
6. Any character+vehicle combination allowed except for Funky Kong on Flame Runner
7. You may switch your character+vehicle combination if you move onto the next round
8. No snaking. Multiple power-slides along a single curve is allowed however.
1. Random course selection
2. 4-Player race
3. NO SNAKING
But what I would like to know is what vehicles should we use? Karts? Motorcycles? Both?
I was thinking Karts only since the motorcycles basically have unlimited speed boost due to wheelies.
And you can't adjust the number of laps in a Wi-Fi race

. I can sort of do it on the ds but not like the ones on wifi xD. The wii I would be hopeless. Only karts would make it even better
.I might not enter if it's Karts only.
I mean, I love Mario Kart Wii, but with th addition of the bike, I use that all the time. And wheelies don't give you a major speed boost.
I vote Karts & Bikes!
And no cheap owning, like getting in front of someone and putting a shell behind you.
And what about slipstreaming? Should that be banned?
If Sableyed meant CPU's as in computer controlled players, those don't appear on Wi-Fi.
Karts Vs. Bikes: I use karts myself. Bikes are hard to handle but they're fast, light, and good at tricks. Karts are easy to handle, but they're heavy, have a bigger boost, and good at drifting. It evens out, but personally I don't mind having karts only, just no bikes only. I don't like bikes.
Also, regarding snaking, I've been able to pull it off before, but it was extremely difficult, thus making it even more unfair to those that can't snake. So no snaking.
No spamming Rainbow Road, that's all I care about for course selection. For courses, I vote either A. Random, or B. If you rode on a course before, you can't vote for that course again the next race. So in Round 1, Race 1, say you run Toad's Factory. That means no voting for Toad's Factory next race.
WHAT IS A MARIO KART WII TOURNEY, BUT A MISERABLE PILE OF SECRETS? BUT ENOUGH TALK, HERE'S MY RULES THAT I SUGGEST--ER I MEAN--HAVE AT YOU!
1) Any character
2) Must use character throughout the tourney
3) Random race
4) Matches are ROOMS only. No going into a Worldwide/Region Wi-Fi match and having a 12 person match
5) No HAX
6) No need for a no snaking rule, but I say get rid of it, since it IS impossible in MKWii, HOWEVER, I bet some person will get mad they lost, see that a person drifted a lot down a big narrow passageway and claim HE/SHE SNAKED! I WIN NAO!! HAHAHA!
7) Now, I always use Mii+Sugarscoot but I guess I could sacrifice it for a Kart only tourney. Even though Karts do get 2x drift which makes up for their non-wheeleing.
One more thing though, I don't run this thang, but you don't want bikes in cause of their wheelies...don't go trying to ban drift boosts(if that's what Shadow means by mini-boosts) either, please. >_>;;
Alright, I think we'll keep both karts and bikes (but no Funky Kong on Flame Runner). I think I will allow you to swap characters if you move on to the next round (really, there isn't much of a way we can keep track of who everybody is using, and if they want to switch things up so be it). I still stand with the no snaking, but multiple power slides along a single turn is fine.

Considering how I don't even own the game, and that reading up on it (or even watching a video) doesn't help me very much since I need to feel the game, what's wrong with "Funky Kong on Flame Runner?" Is that essentially the equivalent of the god-tier karts on the DS, or is it much worse? I'm really guessing that it must be worse if that specific combination is being banned.
And I don't see what the issue is on snaking. Given the respective factors for whether or not snaking is possible, along with the fact that snaking on the Wii is loads harder than on the DS (or at least just less useful from what I've seen), I honestly see nothing wrong with snaking, unless the terrain glitch can still be exploited in the Wii version. I mean, I snake, but the terrain glitch is just wrong. Morally, anyway.
On a different note, is it possible to snake on all control schemes, or is it usable on just the classic controller (and possibly the gc controller)?
Snaking is still remotely possible in MKW but it is difficult to pull off so just to be safe it isn't there. As for Funky Kong on Flame Runner, each of the characters can boost certain stats such as speed, weight, acceleration, etc and Funky Kong boosts speed. Combine that with the Flame Runner (the fastest vehicle in the game) and good luck catching up with someone. I see this countless times on Wi-Fi and they always seem to win. I'm a pretty good Mario Kart player myself but I can never seem to catch up with them. By the time you get to your final lap they are already 3/4 of the way done with it.
I say no Funky 'cause he's one of the 3 most annoying characters in the game...
Why did you have to make the characters that give the best bonuses the most annoying Nintendo?!
But speed isn't everything in MKW, I've beaten Funky's with the Quaker before.
I doubt I'll use control hacks, as I'm to used to the current controls...
The better rules: (from the MKWII guru himself)
1. 4 player actually will work...didn't think about the bracket issue
2. Randomly selected course
3. No Hacking
4. Any control scheme you want (Wii Wheel/Wiimote on side, Wiimote+Nunchuck, Classic Controller or GameCube controller)
5. Karts and bikes allowed
6. Any character+vehicle combination allowed including Funky Kong on Flame Runner
7. You may switch your character+vehicle combination
8. Snaking is allowed
9. Items or Itemless it doesn't matter, HOWEVER, if Items are allowed, than don't restrict how they can be used.
10. No Glitching courses. If you don't know what I mean, then good. If you do know, then DON'T DO IT! (inclusive of GV, WGM, and BCWii...pull off MG and you deserve it.
)
actually they can. It's called not using the item.
Change the Funky Kong deal too.
why?
BECAUSE FUNKY KONG IS JUST ANOTHER CHARACTER! Holy crap people, you know how much speed boost FK gets? +4. How much does Rosalina get? +3, Daisy? +5, Baby Daisy? +4 Luigi? +3
etc. etc. etc.
Might as well ban every single character because they are better in a certain stat. Lets also ban all heavies because they have an unfair advantage with weight, ban Bikes because they can do wheelies, ban karts because they can snake, ban all the courses because someone might be better on any of the courses than anyone else, ban manual because it can use MT's, ban auto because It's a cheap, easier way to play, I could go on and on and on and on.
All I'm saying is you know how much difference the speed of funky Kong on Flame Runner REALLY makes? about .01 of a second faster. Whoop-de-frikin-doo.
And on Snaking:
WHY...I repeat, WHY WOULD YOU BAN IT?!? for crying out loud. I DARE YOU TO SNAKE ON THIS GAME! It's not cheap! IT'S STRATEGY!!! And it takes someone VERY skilled to do it. I honestly admire those people that can successfully snake on BC3 on the thin grates over the lava. I mean seriously, I can snake, but I can't even do that. Those people actually place good all the time in a room full of bikes. MKDS I understand...snaking was rather Easy. BUT ON MKWII?!? It's just preposterous to ban it.
These rules are absolutely ridiculous. You've dummed down the game to noobier standards so much that I don't know that I even want to play unless something gets done.
Back to FK/FR:
You may think that FK people have an unfair advantage, but that is not so. It's all about the skill of the player. Bowser Jr. gets +0 in speed. I bet you $1,000,000,000 that if one of those pros that you've played used Bowser Jr instead of Funky, you'd get whupped just as much. In fact, I've seen many Bowser Jr. players in pro all above 9500 VR rooms, and do JUST AS GOOD IF NOT BETTER than the Funkies in the room.
not only that, but have you seen some of the people that use funky? I COULD BEAT SOME OF THEM WITH MY EYES CLOSED!!!
[/rant]
just saying.
In fact, I'm definatly signing up no matter what now...and I'm gonna use Bowser Jr and his stats (worst ones in the game) Just to show y'all what I mean.
Alright, first off, let me apologize for the way that post was presented. Mario Kart Wii Is really the only game I've ever been competitive in, and I kinda can get worked up over it (obviously), but let me say that isn't half as bad as that craphole Mariokartwii.com site has on it.
Anyways, I'm kinda lazy to edit the content of that post to change the tone it is done in, but the points it brings up still applies.
Do I use Funky? no I main Rosalina. Will I use funky for this tourney should I participate? no
Do I snake? In karts, yes (it's impossible/pointless in bikes) but do I use karts often? no. Will I use a kart for this tourney should I participate? no
yea, you'll always have the people that say funky is unfair...there were tons of them on mkwii forums, BUT if someone had made a tourney there that banned funky, they would get flamed, torn to shreds, and banned, even by the people that are anti-funky.
All I'm saying is that it is absolutely pointless to ban things you have banned. The ONLY way to make things 100% fair for everyone, I repeat the ONLY way, is to have everyone use the exact same character, the exact same bike/kart, only pick LC (luigi circuit), no items, team vs., snorefest. What's the point of playing in a tourney if your not allowed to use your favorite character? What's the point of being an expert Karter, and being in a tourney that you can't snake? There isn't a point. If you ban Snaking, I can 100% guaruntee that those that choose to use karts CAN NOT WIN (unless all the bikers get EXTREMELY bad Item luck and all the karters get EXTREMELY good item luck). now that isn't very fair, is it?
I'll repeat the Ideal tournament rules used in nerely all proffessionally done tournaments, but instead of just shrugging them off like you did last time, think about it.
1. No Hacking
2. No Glitching
3. All Characters available to choose
4. All Vehicles available to choose
5. Items, unless 1v1, then Itemless
6. No limits on controller
7. Changing your combo between races is allowed
8. 2-4 players per bracket (for your tournament style play, as this is...otherwise it'd be done with teams, 3v3 minimum)
9. Choose any and all courses you want
10. No repeating courses
11. Snaking and wheeling are allowed
These are called WCL rules. WCL stands for World Clan League, the most prestigious, popular clan tournament out there. These are the standard rules for all clan matches, all tournaments (exceptions made, depending on what the tournament is trying to accomplish, for example, only N64 characters and courses may be chosen only on Standard Kart), and all somewhat decently organized gatherings. These are the proper rules.
9. and 10. can be and often will be substituted with random only. This is fine and normal, and no one, including myself, has a problem with it.
It is debatable whether I participate in this or not if you keep the same rules you currently have, but If I do, I will probably use Rosalina. Change to these rules, and I WILL participate, and use Rosalina.
The funkykong flame rider combo, gives a ridiculous boost and is notably superior to everything else in the game when it comes to speed. (which is what you want in a racing game. Flame rider also has notably amazing handling) Most people who use the combo do not have enough skill to play regularly, and instead rely on this combos speed handicap. This is why it is banned. But we'll let the polls decide. As for snaking, I could care less.
Note: Im against all speed characters in the game, if there played JUST to win. I can understand if there your favorite character, but when was funky kong in a popular game last?

Here's my little schpiel on this.
"If it ain't broken, don't fix it. It's not rocket science." If there is a combination of character/kart/bike that is extremely overused and broken, then in my opinion, it's like the people on Brawl WiFi that always choose Fox and Final Destination, the people on The Conduit who always choose Long and Short, Marathon, and Streets, the people on Prime: Hunters that always choose Combat Hall and Trace. It gets boring, it gets frustrating to have to go up against the same thing repeatedly and fail repeatedly, and it's overall lame. And last time I checked, a few of the characters you mentioned can't use Flame Runner, they're in specific classes, and to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong) but Funky Kong is in the Medium class, so Rosalina definitely can't benefit from the Flame Runner's insane speed. Otherwise, it'd be a Rosalina-Flame Runner combo. Now, onto snaking. CAN I do it? Yes, it took me a while to get down, but I can pull it off successfully on MKWii. Do I perform snaking manuevers OFTEN? No, because there's simply no need. Should it be banned? Most definitely, because being able to snake gives you that much of an advantage over those that can't perform it. And not all of us are "expert Karters". Me, I haven't played MKWii in a month or so, and I certainly never played it regularly. I've been able to win many rounds online without using snaking and other "expert" manuevers. So, even if snaking WASN'T banned in our tourney, I could tell you now that only one or two people would actually try to do so. Pointless to ban, sure, but if you do so, you even the odds and bridge the gap between beginner/casual Kart players and the expert players. Which, I must say, is a big gap. The rules I think that should be applied are: 1. No hacking or glitching or other means of cheating (seriously, no.) 2. No snaking 3. Certain character/vehicle combos that are incredibly unbalanced and unfair are banned 4. Items allowed (That's one of the defining aspects of Mario Kart that separates it from other racing games, why not allow it?) 5. Any controller (All the people racing with their Double Dash!! skills would be extremely ticked if they couldn't race with familiar controls) 6. No changing VEHICLE between races. Changing character is allowed. If you plan on using Mii's, no modifying them between rounds. (Vehicles are where the money is on, if you exclude skill. The character changing is only a minute change, but making a tiny, skinny Mii to a big fat one will obviously make a huge difference in play. Also, you wouldn't be able to use the same vehicle, now would you?) 7. All courses are fair game, just don't spam the same track every round (Especially not Rainbow Road. It's great and all, but you don't need to race on it four out of four times) 8. Wheeling and tricks are allowed (Wheeling is a natural buttonpress reflex, unlike snaking which takes skill and knowledge of drift mechanics) There. If you don't like it, I can totally understand, but at least I gave you good reasoning. In the end, I'm not the one who makes the rules anyways, it's whatever sounds best. |

No items!
Funky Kong only! Rainbow Road! BEHOLD THE FINAL DESTINATION OF MARIO KART WII! |
I skimmed a few things.
For one Mach bike is not the quickest medium bike, Sneakster is, it has significantly horrid handling compared to the flame rider which is fact. You have to REALLY crack down and learn how to steer if your using it as it make flame rider seem like a cake walk to use, all just to keep up with funky kong flame rider and its STILL probably not as quick with yoshi. Using the worst handling bike in the game just to use your favorite character. As for the .01 quicker thing, please don't make up face proof unless you provide evidence as I know for a fact its not true. .-.
Heres the stats if you wish too look.
Sneakster http://www.mariowiki.com/Sneakster
Flamerider http://www.mariowiki.com/Bowser_Bike
Funky kong http://www.mariowiki.com/Funky_Kong
Scroll down to the speed part on this article and look at his +2 speed boost.
TL;DR version:
Funky kong with flame rider
Pros
1: Heavy class character
2: The bike itself weight is ranked "high" even in heavy weight
2. +2 character speed
3: "Very high" bike speed
4: Great drifting
5:Great mini-turbo
6: Inside drifter
Cons:
1: Bad accel
2: Bad steering (Im adding this just for you. Until you drive a sneakster/spear you don't know what bad steering is. .-.)
We'll let the vote handle this, but don't get your hopes up. You may want to consider your wrong if you notice that everyone is against your decision. Almost everyone is able to use funky kong, flame rider combo, but its the same old crap we always see on wi-fi. Yawwwn.
Sneakster is indeed the fastest, But Mach Bike is the most balanced.
Just like Flame Runner isn't the fastest heavy, Spear is. Look it up I don't need to use this vocabulary.I don't need to use this vocabulary.I don't need to use this vocabulary.I don't need to use this vocabulary.I don't need to use this vocabulary..
The best is NOT classified as the fastest. I wanna shoot all those noobs that say that.
TL;DR = I don't care enough about what you have to say to read your very long and thought out post because I automatically assume your a noob anyways. TL;DR to me, means that someone is a lazy ass who needs to get off their I know everything and you know nothing high horse and realize that there's a world out there.
I know it's a bad assumption I have, but You saying TL;DR automatically makes you a noob to me, sorry.
I have driven the sneakster/spear plenty of times. I'm not saying it's easy learning that. Your making assumptions that you know nothing about. Only Noobs jumped directly to the Spear. I'm not comparing bikes with each other, but looking at them individually.
practice what you preach.
.01 is not an exact number retard, it's an expression of the difference being so low that there is practically no difference at all. Look the #'s up yourself if your so picky about knowing the exact #, but I can guaruntee 100% it's under .1 of a second.
Maybe you ought to get off of your TL;DR high horse ass and read the last few paragraphs. Where I said I didn't care anymore.
Get a life retard, but as for me, I'm going to bed.
Edit: Aww, I just read the rest of your post. On second thought, let me respond to you in the following
|
I can see that I'd win waaaaaaay to easily, and these rules your throwing up here are preposterous. There's no way this thing would be any sort of fun, so there's no point.
And IDK if any of you doubt my ability, but just so you know what you scraped out of having to lose to: I've reached 9999 VR at least 20+ times Constantly stay above 9000 VR easily playing only in pro rooms Achieved 3 stars on over 10 licenses. Achieved 8th regional on the Rainbow Road+Chain Chomps+Karts only Competition held late last year for a short period of time. Basing the final 10th regional against my time, I'd say I got about 15th regional. Just saying. |
And what are you? 8000 vr? People I can beat laugh at how noobish that VR is.
You haven't seen anything yet.
Go to mariokartwii.com and claim your good posting your true VR and I dare you to last a week. I tried to be nice about all of this crap, but I don't care anymore.
GL failing at life.

Flare, neither nor you anybody has the right to treat everybody else like trash because they're not as good as you at something, especially not something as petty as a video game.
I think the point of this tournament was to have fun with members from the forum, and I totally understand that you may have been expecting a tournament for those who are very much into Mario Kart Wii, and really know the game inside and out. However, like I said, you don't get too rag on other people who aren't as good as you, and instead of acting like you rule this thread maybe you should join a tournament with people with as much knowledge of the game as you. You would probably enjoy yourself more and not get as worked up, as well as the people here.
GOOD GRIEF I WASN'T EXPECTING THIS MUCH ARGUING! THE FREAKEN BRAWL TOURNAMENT HAD LESS THEN THIS!
Alakazamaster said it best:
It's hard to make that big of an argument with Brawl when there's a site that's still finding things for Melee and Smash 64. Please note, the said site is smashboards. MK is different in that there are more factors than "hitboxes, hurtboxes, priority, range, startup lag, ending/landing lag, etc," which by the way is still quite a lot. However, because items in MK can't really be turned off, it's more realistic to say that it's easier pulling one out of a hat when it comes to MK. That said, I don't wanna say that Char/Kart combos don't matter (because obviously, that's not true), but arguing about facts and other such in MK when anything can happen is stupid.
Anyway. Assuming the WiFi connection is great, how's the controller lag like? As in, does it take a little while after inputting a command before the action is actually taken, like in Brawl on HD/WiFi? I think that should be a deciding factor as to whether Funky Kong/Flame Runner should be banned or not.

I've been in a MKW tournament before, and it all got completely messed up.
MY game said I was 2nd, but so did a load of other people's. When I crossed the finish line, a big '2nd' came up on my screen, but the leaderboard said I was 8th. This is just a heads-up, but if you ever find yourself in pole-position online, don't take it easy. There's a whole lot of lag on MKW, but you probably won't see it until the race has finished.
