If they do make the game compatible with the 3DS, I would think seeing animated 3D models would be better. You would be able to switch back to 2D sprites even if you didn't like the 3D effect.
I wouldn't mind seeing a 3D Reuniclus while I battle, so I'm for the 3D models for the pokemon.

1 – GalliumGrantWell, seeing as how Gamefreak loves making the pokemon games compatible with all DS systems, I think we'll be seeing more 3D cutscenes and 3D stuff lying around, but we won't be seeing 3D pokemon.
You also have to consider the work that goes into a 3D model; Building it, Texturing (Which can be a pain in the a**) rigging, animating, and all that lovely stuff. Plus, GF said they prefer working with 2D sprites, so I think we'll have 2D sprites in the main games for quite a whiles.
2 – AuraKshatriya, Wulf CinesIt better be 5D holograms or else I'll be horrified and disappointed.
I honestly don't care.

I agree with the first part:
The overworld is already in 3D. The battle backgrounds are already in sorta-3D-in-the-sense-that-it's-actually-a-pasted-on-background-texture-stretched-all-over-the-scene. (Better than the purely bitmap background in Generation IV, and certainly waaaaay better than tiled backgrounds in Generation III!) They pretty much have most of the cutscenes to use at the very least 3D backgrounds. The logical next step, if they are on capable hardware, is to eliminate most sprites. The big problem is that there's simply so much work. Models and textures may be able to be recycled from past 3D games and Pokédex 3D, but sometimes it's for stylistic reasons - and sometimes the time it takes to make it look OK-ish. |
Eh, 3D would feel departed and just... feel weird on an incomplete generation, within the main series. The graphics would just differ. Let's stick with those sprites that have so much care and attention to.
3 – Wulf Cines, 7dewott8, GalliumGrantI would really prefer 3D models if possible. It's an upgrade that's already happened in the overworld and is pending for a long time in battles. But I'm not sure if they can really pull it off. BW left only about 30MB free space on the 256MB chip and I'm not sure if, considering the new games will have updated graphics, it would be possible to stuff all those models into such a space. But hope dies last.
