Apparently since nobody here talks about the gory, violent, obscure twisted classic by Namco, I'd like to dedicate this thread to this franchise - that is if any of you have heard of it.
For those of you who don't know, Splatterhouse is a series started in 1988. It began when the first arcade cabinet was released into the arcades. Unfortunately, though, the game itself didn't get good feedback; not because of the gameplay or design, but the hardcore violence. It's dark, gruesome, grotesque and depressing feel was totally inappropriate for young minds - but it was fun as all hell. Splatterhouse was one of the first good violent game's ever released. And it starred one of the greatest badasses in video gaming history - Rick Taylor. (BTW, this guy is still around today with the newest release by BottleRocket, which then was changed to another producer. Anyways, back to the intro of the main character.)
Rick Taylor had a girlfriend and classmate named Jennifer. As part of a class project they had to do research on a man named Dr. West. Dr. West was rumored to have been involved in multiple horrific experiments, and was a well known scientist who at the time was missing. Legend says that these same "experiments", loosely put, were inside a mansion, simply known as the Splatterhouse. As part of their project involving Dr. West, they decide to do an investigation of this seemingly abandoned buliding.
As soon as Rick and Jennifer enter, they are attacked by demonic creatures.
Jennifer is dragged away, with Rick fatally wounded, left for dead. Soon a supernatural mask descends, giving Rick a chance to save his girl. What is the name of this mystical relic with a mind of it's own? "The Terror Mask".
Now Rick must kill demonic creatures and rush through the Mansion to find his girl. And he never stops until the job is done.

Actually the new one doesn't sound too bad. Truth be told I was kind of impressed with it.
The only two Splatterhouse games I've played would be the Arcade version (my fav version) and Splatterhouse 2.
Splatterhouse on the Arcade was totally awesome in my book, while Splatterhouse 2 being the first I've played was pretty fun. Glad to see somebody contributed though. Unfortunately there isn't a lot of replies, so I'm assuming this game series has been rarely heard of.
