On August 12th here in North America the 3DS will have its price dropped from $249 to $169.95.
Details for Europe are yet to announced.
For people who have already bought the 3DS at its high price they're going to give away 20 free games for the people who bought them early with 10 free NES Virtual Console games being released early.
According to the Official Nintendo Magazine:
|
If you connect your 3DS to eShop before August 11th, you'll be registered. Then, from 1st September, ten NES games will be free to download. Nintendo have confirmed five to us, so far: Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jr, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda. After that, by the end of the year, ten more Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games will be available to download for free. Five GBA titles have been confirmed so far: Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario Vs Donkey Kong. |
Holy Arceus, that was a quick price drop, and it is for 1/3 of the price! Looks like I'll be getting one sooner then I expected. See children, this is why patience is a virtue.

Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future. |

1 – LeaftailIt actually makes sense to get it now, without the price drop, too, since you'll be getting 20 free games over the eShop. Assuming each is approx. $4 that makes up for the -$80 the discount takes it down anyway. Or, people who get it with the discount and want all the games end up paying the full price. So it's pretty even.
Now I feel like I've been ripped off.
Even though I got it for free.
Whatever.
Going by UK prices, if an NES game is £3.50 (500 Wii points) and it'll be 10 of those, and 10 GBA games (Let's assume they'll be £7 each, or 1000 Wii points), you'd be paying £105. Considering the RRP of the 3DS in the UK was £230 (We got SO ripped off with that), that's almost worth half of the cost of the 3DS. Even if the GBA games were only £5 each you're still looking at a good £85, which is just over 1/3 of the price of a 3DS.
Also take into account that we'll get the NES games earlier, and that the GBA games aren't even slated to be released to the general public and I'd say that's a DARN GOOD DEAL.
EDIT: @Kakashi that was an error with Amazon stocks of Black 3DSes which has since been resolved.
1 – LiteTheIronManMy mom must be dumb, well if the problem has been fixed im hoping to get a 3DS sometime soon, cause i need a new DS as my top area has hinge damage and it wont stay in place anymore (the thing that makes it stay open in place), but it stays works though i just have to hold up the top area when playing in a certin angle.
This business position is definitely going to boost 3DS sales (oh really Lite we had no idea that something being cheaper means people will be more likely to buy it)
3 – Ningamer, 7dewott8, Cat333PokémonWell in terms of Pokémon, I'd LOVE it if you can somehow trade Pokémon from one VC title to another. Especially if they let you bring your Gen. I and II Pokémon into Gen. III, or use the PokéShifter/Pal Park from your Gen. III digital copies. That would certainly help people who don't have the GBA slot. And I have no doubts they'll at least release FR/LG for the Virtual Console. WIth this announcement of GBA games, I expect them to remake R/S and release FR/LG as they are on the eShop.
Got me a 3DS at the lower price that includes Ambassador program. Thank you, Wal-Mart!
