Nintendo has reveled one of the first apps for the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This app titled Pokédex 3D will allow you to view all 150+ Pokémon that appear in Black/White.

Function wise, it is essentially a "deluxe" Pokédex and shows a fully rotatable 3D model of the Pokémon. You start off with 16 Pokémon and can aquire more through QR Codes, SpotPass, or trading with others. In addition, it can also be used with the 3DS's cameras to add the Pokémon into your pictures much like the Augmented Reality cards. And the best part, this app will be free!

Free?

I was expecting to pay once I read the first two sentences. And I would have.
The models in the screenshots look really nice and detailed - reminiscent of PokéPark Wii's ones. Too bad it's only Unova Pokémon, I'd really like a whole Pokédex that I could take around with me!

A 3D free Pokédex? Do want! I'll be sure to pick it up when I get a 3DS.

Edit: Wait, that's a REAL Pokédex, with move levels and all! Now it actually has a use!

This is pretty cool. This gives me another reason to look forward to the eShop release! Free stuff is sometimes the best kind of stuff.

The font reminds me of Zelda: Windwaker. If I ever get a 3DS, you can be sure this will be one of my downloads.

"For once"? Actually, North America usually got most things (video game-related things, anyway) before Europe, and much before Australia. It is only in recent time that they have made more of an effort to give Europe earlier launch dates, or dates closer to those of North America.

I think he was referring to the fact that we get it before Japan, which is something that has happened almost never for anything Nintendo-related.

Man, this makes me want the 3DS even more. This'll definitely be my first eShop download.

Also, I think this shows that the handheld Pokemon games are becoming more and more like the console games, as this is I think the first time a 3D Pokemon model has hit a handheld system.

Technically that's actually the same day as us since they're ahead of America time-wise.

M&L: Partners in Time, M&L: Superstar Saga, and Twilight Princess all come to mind of games released in the US before Japan. ...I don't think a free Pokédex in the eShop really falls into the same "class" here...

Not quite. I know Dash and that Pikachu DS demo had some 3D models first, and DPPHgSsBW all had 3D models on the title screens.

Plus, HgSs's were both nicely animated. (...Were BW's too?)

Good news everyone!

Eshop's open, just opened at what I'd estimate to be 10PM California. Totally downloaded this <3

I got all the starters and evolutions, making nine.

Then I've got...
Audino
Axew
Emolga
Foongus (ew)
Hydreigon
Minccino
Scraggy

EDIT: Kay yes, everyone starts the same. Serebii's already got the hammer on the screw:

Got it today, it's terrible. I wasn't aware that you collect Pokemon through street pass? Would rather an actual Pokedex, I don't like the menu's ether. Overall i feel it's pretty useless, it does looks very nice in 3D though.

And here I was expecting an ACTUAL, Pokedex app. Thanks for crushing my hopes, Game Freak.

I got:

Snivy
Servine
Serperior
Oshawott
Dewott
Samurott
Tepig
Pignite
Emboar
Audino
Axew
Emolga
Foongus
Hydreigon
Minccino
Scraggy

So I'm going to have to walk all around town until i pass by 600+ people that also have this app?

Greeattt...

Reeeeaaaadddd the threeeeaaad before you complaaaain about our advertised produuuct.

For the record, this is much more of a complete Pokedex than the actual ingame Dex. It even has complete movesets.

That said, it seems like everyone got the same Pokemon...? I guess the dispersion of randomly generated Pokemon might change over time, but that sort of ruins the point of the app if all of your friends have the same Pokemon as you.

Uh... You can get up to 3 Pokemon a day via SpotPass, and then there are QR codes.

Besides, knowing the internet, there'll be people posting QR codes on some pretty database or something.

Not to mention there's nothing wrong with scavanging for other 3DSers with Pokemon you don't have... :c

edit: woops, missed this whole new page, Lite beat me to it

Still it's a terrible Pokedex, what's up with the Bar stats? Horrible and will defiantly turn off Street pass and silly notifications.

How is it terrible? It is great if you need help with Moves certain Pokemon learn. And I see no problem with the stats, other than it not giving an exact number, but then it would have to label it for each level, and it isn't like it knows what IV and EV you choose.

If you don't like it, then don't play it.

Anyway, anyone else curious if it will have more than Unova in it?

My predictions to this are...

1. The free Pokedex we have now has only Unova Pokemon, and in the future there'll be a Pokedex with all Pokemon in it that you have to pay for.

2. There will be an update with all the other Pokemon in it.

3. This game has no plans for Pokemon outside Unova.

The Pokédex looks really detailed and cool, and I didn't expect them to offer it for free. However, it's of no use over here since not many people have a 3DS. So yeah, even if I bought a 3DS and downloaded the Pokédex, it's going to be more or less useless for me. =/
