CNN article
Looks pretty interesting, but they're really aiming to make the NGP (just its code name for now) into a cell phone (and incorporate social networking, which I'm assuming is Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and the like)? That's a pretty interesting take on portable gaming. I'm assuming Sony is thinking along the lines of the iPhone and the N-Gage for that.
One thing for sure: Sony NGP looks much better and more promising than its failing predecessor, the PSP Go. However, even if this turns out to have better specifications and features than the 3DS (which I doubt), I will probably not think of getting it. The games on the 3DS are more interesting in my opinion, and the 3D on it is adjustable and more likely to be better. However, I'm still curious to find out how much the NGP will incorporate from cell phone functionality. Perhaps that might set it apart from its competitors?
To me, it just looks like another iteration of the PSP, but then again, the same could be said for the 3DS. The cell phone idea is certainly an interesting one, but assuming this is one that needs a plan, it's most likely doomed to fail, in my own opinion. The thing with an iPhone was that it was a phone first, but a gaming platform later. This is trying to do both at the same time. Only the hard core Sony fans will get this on release if there's a contract involved, as with most phones.
A slightly better article describing it: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2...-and-games.ars
Its basically Sony doing what the 3DS is doing. Except, the DSi cost $180 bucks and the PSP cost $300... Do /not/ wanna hear how much the NGP costs xD
I seriously thought the PSP Go was the worst move I saw regarding Sony's handhelds. Unlike, say, the Game Boy Micro--which in itself was intended to be a cheap and slimmed down model only capable of the newest bit of the library (no legacy support)--the PSP Go made the entire physical game library unplayable and focused entirely on downloads. For very few people, such as those who don't use it much for gaming or those who hack it, it could be a reasonable purchase, but I just couldn't see myself using something like that, even if it was discounted.
I do want to eventually pick up a PSP for a few games like Loco Roco and Little Big Planet, but for now, I'll continue to wait.
By the way, Sony guarentees it will "cost less than $599 dollars"...
How much did the PS3 cost at launch, anyway?
2 – LiteTheIronMan, Ditto616
8 – Holo-Chan, LiteTheIronMan, Ditto616, NismoZ, FreezeWarp, Fubab_107, LucarioMario, alternateshadow300I don't really have any opinion on the apparently-awful PSP Go, as I've never used one, but the PSP was basically an Xbox 360 in a handheld... yet the NGP appears to be the same. The 3DS has Wii-quality graphics, and the obvious Nintendo innovation. The 3DS has won even before their releases.
Also, I've found a demo video of the NGP that popped up in the most popular video in the Science & Technology category on YouTube today.
