Just got my desktop back from repair but the speakers aren't working. All of the cables are plugged in where they should be. The sound should be coming out but it isn't. Any ideas? :l

Does it work fine with a headset?

I apologize in advance...

Is the sound /muted/? If Windows XP says no, have you tried in several different applications? (I recommend Youtube, a video in Windows Media Player/VLC, and some random sound-enabled Flash Game)

I do know I have had this happen to myself - always good to check the obvious

I tried Youtube and a Flash Game last night to no avail, and it's not muted. I believe it just isn't picking up the speakers or something. And I've already tried rebooting.

Well, definitely isn't your speakers themselves then.

I know this is gonna sound crazy... Can you go into the full volume mixer (if you haven't already) and make sure everything is at full volume and nothing is muted? If you don't know what I mean by the full volume mixer, here is a screenshot:

Simply right click the volume icon and choose "Open Volume Mixer".

If that doesn't work, have you tried plugging your headphones directly into the back of the computer where the speakers go? I dunno, its always good to eliminate /every/ possibility, ya know? xD

I honestly don't see the volume icon on the bottom right, probably because my computer isn't recognizing my speakers or something. :l

Check this then:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...undvolume.mspx

See if the checkbox for "place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked.

Perhaps I should include an image... I can't adjust the volume due to this.

...That helps.

From my own personal experience, this means the repair shop forgot to get an extra driver. I would personally recommend using this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...nddrivers.mspx

It's telling me to install ActiveX but when I click the bar at the top of the screen it just tries to get me to install Windows Update again.
