I've seen it say 1 expericence point from the next level several times before. I've even seen it somewhere around level 80.

As soon as I read that I thought about training my pikachu- I was re-battling the elite four, and it could almost defeat whatever it was fighting (cant remember), but it left it at around 1 hp, and its exp was really close to leveling (like 16 or so close). I remember it getting ko'd and thinking... WHY DID I HAVE TO RUN FROM ALL THOSE WILD POKEMON!!! NOOO!!!

This happened with my level 30 Ampharos, I think it was. It's a sight to see, but not too rare.
