Microsoft recently released a plugin for the Firefox browser that enables it to use the H.264 video with the native HTML5 video format. This is only available on Windows 7, and it uses a technology only available in that version. With this in mind, current HTML5 video support can now be described as (approx. usage share in parents):
| Codec | Internet Explorer 9 (<1%) | Chrome (15%) | FireFox (25%) | Safari (5%) | Opera (2%) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ogg Theora | With DirectShow Filter | Built-in | Built-in | Nope | Built-in |
| H.264 | Built-in | Built-in | With Microsoft Plugin | Built-in | Nope |
| Google VP8 | With DirectShow Filter | Built-in | Built-in | Nope | Built-in |
Ok, I use Firefox. And it is the latest version, but I have a few questions - when exactly would I use HTML5? Do I use it without knowing it (which would be odd because I don't have this plugin)? I want to know what I'm downloading before I download it.
And yes, I am technologically slow.
