PokéNews → North American Names of B/W Starter Pokemon and Region Revealed

Pokemon.com has finally revealed the North American names for the 3 starter Pokemon of Pokemon Black and White, as well as the region in the games. Tsutarja, the grass type Pokemon, is called Snivy, a portmanteau of Snake and Ivy. Pokabu, the Fire-Type starter is known as Tepig, a combination of Tepid and Pig, and finally, the Water-Type starter, Mijumaru, is to be called Oshawott, which seems to be a combination of either the name of the city "Oshawa", in Toronto, Canada, or "Ocean", with "Water", and "Otter". Additionally, for the first time in Pokemon`s history, the name of the region in a mainstream game has been changed. The region found in Pokemon Black and White, Isshu, will be known to international audiences as Unova, which seems to be a play on the word "Unknown", referencing how the Isshu (Unova) Region is farther away from any of the previously introduced regions than they are from each other. Additionally, the North American names for the abilities and Species Names of Reshiram and Zekrom have been revealed. Reshiram`s ability is still called "Turboblaze", and it is now known as the Vast White Pokemon (originally being the "White Yang" Pokemon). Zekrom`s ability`s name has been changed to "Teravolt" from "Teravoltage", and it will now be known as the Deep Black Pokemon (originally being called the "Black Yin Pokemon")

I'm sure these names will seem weird as heck to a lot of people, but pretty soon we'll be so used to them like we are with the names of the other Pokemon.

Fix'd.

And yeah, these names aren't my favorite. Snivy should work, though, because I could never spell Tsutarja. XD Tepig seems more like 'teh pig' and Oshawott sounds kind of like an Electric-type.

I'll just throw out there that I doubt Oshawott is based on Oshawa and otter.

I think it's based off of Ocean (I will now misspell that so that it will sound the same: oshan), water, and Otter. Who is going to pronounce Oceawott correctly, anway? That's my two cents.

Oshawott hmm.... I can't say that I am a huge fan of it , but I like it, I think it will grow on me. Snivy is pretty good too, but Tepig? o.0

Sounds like "Da' pig" I can't even imagine how they are going to make that sound in the anime. xD

I expect everyone here's gonna rage about these. A lot. So I'm just going to put a link here.

Anyway, Snivy is good, when I hear Oshawott I picture a nice Canadian river, and I'm gonna go against popular opinion and say Tepig really isn't that bad. Sure, it's not good, either, but look at the link. We're all going to not care after a few months passed.

I really like how they changed the region's name. I hated how foreign Isshu sounded, considering this is supposed to be America.

Unova... nova means new... Wait a minute! That's a different language! Forget what I just said...

I (unlike most people, apparently) like the new names (except Tepig. WTH.), especially Snivy.

Besides Tepig, I think Snivy and Oshawott actually sound pretty good! Now I just gotta remember not to call Snivy Tsutaaja anymore...oh well.

But Tepig? I honestly don't really care for that name. :/

Oh yeah, are you supposed to pronounce it YOU-no-va, or UH-no-va? I think it's the former, but the latter makes the region name sound more relevant to the point Game Freak is trying to get across. (Well, I guess we got the "O" sound back, so we're 5 for 5)

Snivy is ok, although I would much prefer Smugleaf.

I have no acceptance for Oshawott or Tepig. I think Nintendo just pounded their keyboards and chose whatever letters came up on their computer screen, derp

Snivy: Not as good as smugleaf, but fits the character. I kind of like it.
Tepig: Really? There's a bunch of better fire pig puns out there, game freak.
Oshawott:...

WHAT? just.... what. I'm just trying to figure out the logic behind this. Why is it named after a canadian river? How does that make any sense?

Totally this. The fact that for several months we've become attached to using the japanese names or fan-made names, only to have the official names be revealed and make all that irrelevant, really messes with us. However, it won't be long before we all get used to the official names like we did with previous generations.

I remember when people were talking about the game names being racist or whatever, but not anymore, since we've pretty much learned to accept the names Black and White.

I agree. It won't be long till I'm totally used to calling them Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott. Even now it took me a little time to remember these. I'm gonna just have to get used to it. Although I still don't like Tepig that muc- *shot*

Oh well. I still can't wait till the other names show up.

Snivy = Awesome. Reflects the Pokémon's sinister character.
Tepig = No. It sounds strange and uncreative.
Oshawott = What?! The name sounds more jumbled and mixed up than the others.
Unova = Awesome. Relevant to the region being modern and far away from the other regions.

Other than that, I'm also finding them weird because I got used to the Japanese names (Mijumaru and Pokabu sound better, in my opinion). Despite that, I hope I accept these names when the games are released in America.

Reading through all the new comments, I pretty much agree with anything about how the names will grow on us like they have in previous generations and how they've always been silly, like CHAR + salaMANDER and MUDsKIPper.

i believe that unova means since nova is portugiese for new, i think it means starting a new beginning since the game resets to route 1 its like a whole new game new region new pokemon new trainer design new elite 4 style. etc.

Being evil or good is unrelavent to the game because being evil in pokemon is impossible

and in my opinion from what gymnotide lastly said i think hes kinda self centered.

My Opinions of Official English, Official Japanese, and Fan Nicknames.

Smugleaf > Snivy > Tsutarja
Piglit (or any pun, really) > Pokabu (Albeit, Pokabu is a great Japanese name) > Tepig
Oshawott > Mijimaru > Wotter (or Derpderp)

So now that I think about it, Oshawott is currently the best name for Mijimaru, actually. It's a shame, I don't really like any of its names, why is this thing so difficult to come up with good names for? On the other hand, Pokabu is the easiest thing to name ever, so why the hell did they pick Tepig? Snivy is a fine name that I am sure I will grow to like, I'm just stuck on Smugleaf thanks to the internet.

someone should make a thread that contains a list that looks something like this:

And constantly keep it updated when new american names are revealed.
I know this would help me out...idk about anyone else though.
