No. There are special DS homebrew cartridges that run of Micro SD cards. You can use the Micro SD card and put it into your computer to download homebrew. Some of them even allow you to run DS ROMs. The most famous flash card is the R4, which can play homebrew and DS ROMs. I personally use a Datel Games n' Music. It runs of a MicroSD card, but only allows for running homebrew games.

Now links plz. And then(not to be a bother) could you please xplain how to connect it to the computer with the card? Do you use an SD card reader? If so, then how do you put the SD card in the DS?

Most DS flash cards run off a Micro SD card. Many Micro SD cards can be put into the computer by a Micro SD - USB adapter (the Datel Games n' Music comes with one) or a Micro SD to SD card converter if your computer has a SD slot built in. The SD card runs in your DS by using a flashcard. Like I mentioned before, the most popular one is the R4 which can play homebrew and DS ROMs. I use the Datel Games n' Music (about $20) which runs just homebrew (which is fine because if I want to play actual DS games I go out and buy it). I'll get some links for moar info.

Hmm... I didn't know that I could use my R4 like that. I'll have to try it sometime.

Are these homebrews necessarily safe?

For the most part, yes. Some applications/games might crash or freeze, but it won't affect your DS. There are many types of homebrew apps available. Here are some of my favorites:

DSOrganize -An organizer with things like a calculator, clock, calender, and even a web brwoswer Link
DSVideo-Video player Link
GBABackupTool - Makes a copy of your saved data from your GBA game in the GBA slot and makes a backup copy to your SD card, which can be saved on your computer for backup purposes
LameBoy-GameBoy/GameBoy Color emulator Link
Moonshell-Media player (Music, images, etc) Link
NESDS-NES emulator Link
PocketPhysics-An addicting "game" where you can draw lines and stuff and watch them move Link

DS Doom is one of my favorites, along with most of what Yoshi mentioned.

To keep things legal we should NOT discuss the downloading of copyright protected roms.
We can discuss downloading emulators, patches, emulation software and homemade roms as these are legal.

All ROMs have to be created by someone, so technically, all homebrews are home made.

There is a difference between copyrighted ROMs that someone simply dumped and homebrew which people release as share-ware.

The engine of DS Doom actually is not copyrighted. However, the WAD level pack that comes with the store copy of the game is copyrighted. Id originally released DOOM as shareware with a demo WAD on a download server, but the rest of the game is the same as the full version of the game that came on the floppy/CD.
