The Generation I titles, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow Versions, will be coming to the Nintendo 3DS eShop on February 27, 2016! Unlike most other Virtual Console titles, these classics will support wireless trading to improve upon the original trades requiring a Game Link Cable. You'll be able to download all three titles next February to enjoy where it all started without fear of dying batteries or deteriorating cartridge contacts!
I pretty much said the same thing a few years ago: they absolutely would not release Gen I or II on the Virtual Console unless they hacked in some kind of trading between the games. And they did, so it happened. 
Yeah, the first generation hasn't aged well. Gen II, on the other hand, is still pretty good, but the mechanics feel dated when compared to the changes that especially came in Gens III and IV. Now the batteries...
2 – kakashidragon, Magmaster12I've been waiting for this day a looooong time. Hopefully G/S/C and R/S/E will be announced for the eShop at some point too. If not, then that's fine, just having R/B/Y is enough to satisfy my nostalgic needs.
1 – MusicThey probably won't patch anything. As far as I know the other Virtual Console games are exact ROMs of their originals, like you can still get into the Minus World in Super Mario Bros., so I'd expect them to do the same for Pokémon.
Also it just now occurs to me that catching them all will be impossible unless they do program in some kind of multiplayer thing. Maybe they'll have a Poké Transporter-like eshop application that'll let you do Gen 1 PVP with your save data?
