Popular video game streaming website Twitch is host to an interesting game concept: use the stream chat to play through Pokemon Red.

Quote:
TwitchPlaysPokemon is a social experiment, it is a stream of the Gameboy version of Pokemon Red (151 romhack) running on an emulator. An IRC bot translates buttons said in chat into keypresses (simulated in software, no fancy typist robots).
Thousands of people around the world playing the same game together? What could possibly go right.

Watch the stream and join in here.

As of the time of this post, the game has been going on for 5 days and 2.5 hours. They are currently in the Rocket Base (you know, the one with all the spinny panels) so might be a while before more progress is made.

I thought this was a joke until I went and looked at it for myself on Saturday. Whoever thought of and implemented this is a bloody genius.

Also, some of my favorite Twitter quotes of all time have come as a response to this stream :^)

In case you haven't heard, somebody had the idea of allowing the chat on a Twitch livestream to control a game of Pokemon Red, in real time! He created a bot that monitors the chat for any valid commands (up, down, left, right, a, b, start, select) and translates those into button presses in an emulator. The stream is currently 5 days old and has peaked at just over 75000 players at one time! As you can imagine, it's a mess. It makes you wonder how we (the Twitch users participating) have managed to get 4 badges already.
