In UK, the students follow the GCSE course, which is national based. An example to that is Ningamer.
AnathemA, Shadow and I take IGCSE which is internationally based. The examinations are world-wise, following the British Cambridge course. It is harder than GCSE and is one of the hardest courses in the world. O-levels is the same, according to Cambridge, as IGCSE. O-levels is the old name which changed to IGCSE recently.

Well, I wish you good luck AnathemA. I am not doing my mocks this year, but I am suffering just like you. It will be fun next year talking to each other about how we will be suffering with the examinations.

I did an O-level too but apart from that it's the simple GCSEs :/
And since I'm at the grammar school it's higher tier for me
Still easy though

anyone watch The Armstrong & Miller show here?

So like, I just realized today that refraction is a really difficult topic in Physics (actually, pretty much everything regarding waves is). I'm already confused and I need the teacher to do some more explanations for me. >_<

Also, Twistedspoon, I never heard of that show which you mentioned...

yeah, It's a British sketch show.
I doubt it's aired outside the UK since it contains lots of British humor, which not many other countires would get XP

oh, refraction?
Light sorta bends when it enters a less dense medium, such as glass or perspex :/
but yes, i can sympathise with bad teachers *coughMrsAppletoncough*

I can explain more if you want, but light and waves is a huge topic, and even an A-level physics student can't explain all of it :s

Ha we did a whole project on refraction in grade 8. It was very simple. Basically what Twisted said, it's how light changes direction when it passes through something because that object it's going through slows it down. Same with when you stick a straw into a glass of water, if you look at it from the side they don't line up, that is also refraction.

Um... our teacher is probably the best teacher in the whole school, so the problem is definitely not with him.

We're looking at it with greater details now, which is why I find it confusing. Like, we have to include the normal correctly, label the angle of incidence/refraction, draw the wavefronts and eventually calculate stuff like the refractive index. Really, considering the way we're studying it now, it cannot be called a simple topic. We have a test next Tuesday on waves which shall prove how much I learned in class. Hopefully that will be enough to earn me an A, for I always expect more from myself regarding studies than teachers/exams ask for.

Yeah, waves are hard to get in mind. We do know that the waves get bent in refraction. We aren't stupid, but as Shadow said, the whole criteria that surround waves, and specifically refraction, is complicated. However, I thing I got the main principle, so I should be fine.

My dad bought a metal detector... one of those things you use to look for metal in the ground so that you can find coins and stuff. Has anyone ever tried using one of those before? How do they perform?

I never knew that they actually existed outside the industrial section. Your father seems to like such machines, doesn't he?
I am sorry, but I don't know about them. However, as my ICT teacher says, "Google it!"

Whenever someone mentions a metal detector, an image of that person holding gold always comes up in my brain. xD

Anyways, I never used one of them before, but I would certainly be interested to do that.

I can't say I've ever seen anybody with a metal detector around here. I guess the fact that I don't go out that much contributes to that. :/

Anyways, my first semester's grades came out, and let's just say I was a little less than satisfied, especially in one particular subject.

Biology P -> Final Exam Score: 103% -> Final Class Grade: 101.41% (A+)
World Geography -> Final Exam Score: 86% -> Final Class Grade: 94% (A)
Chinese -> Final Exam Score: 96% -> Final Class Grade: 99.2% (A+)
Math -> Final Exam Score: 90% -> Final Class Grade: 95.4% (A)
Marching Band -> Final Exam Score: 92% -> Final Class Grade: 94.4% (A)
English Honors -> Final Exam Score -> 88% -> Final Class Grade: 89.25% (B+)

It's my first B since 5th grade and its tearing me apart!

In IGCSE, we throw a party when we get a B. Honestly, come and say this in front of friends, and they will tear you apart. But seriously, they are all some good marks, and even a B is good. It is not like the end of the world. I once got a C in Chemistry this year, but I wasn't really torn; I just improved.
By the way, which grade are you in?

While I do not generally like getting a B in any of my subjects, English Language and English Literature are the only two exceptions, as they are harder than the others. Therefore, in my opinion, an 89% in any one of them is a very satisfactory mark. Anyway, well done on your other grades.

I guess the B tearing me apart was a little melodramatic. I'm still upset about it, though.

I'm in 9th grade, anyways, so it probably oonly gets harder from where I'm at.

Of course, I told HRFTW that I got a B and was that I upset about it. He seemed very happy that he beat me in that class, as he considers me his "rival". That's part of the source of my sadness, not that he beat me, but that he was happy about it. Then, frankly,my other friends don't really care about my grades at all, and only keep their grades in mind.

I finished my remaining finals today. I actually answered all most of the questions on the math final. Hopefully I'm not gonna have to repeat that class...

This totally should have been a half day. I don't know why they made it a full day, considering the last two periods were pretty much filler.

And thus begins the second semester. I checked my schedule and remembered that I signed up for hispanic culture class. Well, I've decided on learning German instead of Spanish, so I should really switch out of that class.

PS: You know that oshawott pic I like so much? I printed it out and put it in front of my binder. It's embarrassing.... but it's cute as hell! I just had to do it!

Over here, most people think that Pokémon is for kids. This is why I have to tolerate such ignorant assumptions, and also why I share my experiences in the games only with a handful of similar students in school. I'm not really complaining, but I would definitely like to be a bit more 'free' about discussing Pokémon without the fear of being overheard.

(Spirit and I actually cut out any words which relate to Pokémon in some way while talking about it. It sounds really funny/strange at times: "Did you hear what GrassFTW said last night?" or "News were released yesterday about Black and White!". People generally don't understand what we're talking about, so the strategy works very well. )

By the way, the forums today are really annoying. Every one minute an error message comes up saying: "The server is too busy right now. Try again later". It is frustrating trying to get your post on the forums by refreshing for many times. >_>

Me too! I don't know if anybody likes them, since nobody ever visits my page... I should probably take my account down soon...

Anyways. Today was the first day of the second semester. As expected, it was frigging stressful.

My first day in unnecessary detail
First period, I had Chemistry class. The teacher is frigging hilarious, but he also said that this class is going to be really hard. Also my friends are on the exact opposite side of the class.

Second Period: German I, taught in the math & foreign language trailer thingy outside. The only class I was looking forward to today. I got to pick my German name, which is Michael (pronounced Mee-shy-el). That class is awesome. It's taught by my favorite teacher in the school. He said that we will be playing lots of games and listening to German music and stuff as much as possible. If he finds something funny on Youtube at the end of class, even if it's not German-related in any way, he'd show it to us.

Third Period: Biology. What [somewhat naughty word] me off is this class is RIGHT NEXT TO MY FIRST PERIOD CLASS. So I have to go upstairs, outside, then back upstairs. RAWR. But the teacher is pretty cool. Hopefully, this will be an easy class.

Lunch. The person I sat next to was really talkative. I got to talk to him the whole lunch period. I'm used to sitting, eating my food, and not acknowledging anyone else's existence while they throw swear words at each other every ten seconds.

Fourth Period: Weight Training. I knew this one was gonna suck. I hate phys ed class. Well, I saw my schedule way back at the beginning of the school year, and I was relieved to see it was a girl. Call me sexist or whatever, but I believe all male PE teachers are arseholes who scream a lot, and female PE teachers never scream or give you detention or anything, and are more fun to be with. Thankfully, I was right. She was pretty funny. We played a game called Ninja. I sucked at it, but it was fun, except for the part when a girl accidentally Karate Chopped my nose.

Fifth Period: Hispanic Culture. When I walked in the class, and the teachers (there were three of them) got us all into the right seats, one of them started talking, then stopped and stared at me and said, "You took this class already." Turns out they just renamed Conversational Spanish, which I took last year. So I had to go to the guidance counselor and get a new fifth period class. Sadly, I was put in Assessing Green. Hopefully that class isn't as hard as people say it is. Looking at the bright side, the guys sitting next to me were pretty cute :3

I swear I will start studying more this semester. I somehow managed to get through last semester without really studying at all. But I have a feeling my new classes are gonna be a lot harder than my old ones, especially Chemistry and Bio.

Wait, so you get new classes every semester? Interesting.

Today the second day of the second semester for me, and the only thing that changes in my schedule is that my World Geography becomes Health. Overall, today was like any other day, but my Health teacher is cool.

I took my finals already but I don't know my grades for some of them until next week. For right now, I got 103% on math since the teacher lower down the total scores(It was originally out of 40), and 84% on Chemistry. Honestly I don't like the school year is divided by semesters. You can make up work if they gave you enough time but since I am drowning with homework that hurts my grade and other people who already tried to improve their grade have no recovery from getting a passble grade. I usaully get A's in my classes except on harder classes where I actually have to work my butt off to earn that grade *coughscoughsphysics*. The only class I am strugging with is U.S History which I have a C in my mid term grade(no final grade is determine yet) otherwise I did well with my classes espeically IB Chemistry. Since getting straight A's is very difficult to hold as you go on high school (unless you take easy classes or you are good at schoolwork), at long my grade is good enough for NHS and have a GPA at least 3.5, I don't mind.

On the other note, I have gym as my elective. I like it to get out of the way so I don't need to take in my senior year and focus on my plans after high school. This Friday I plan to take a field trip to the dentist school in my University State and I am hoping that I narrow down the job choices relating to the medical field.

That's how it was in my last semester. Three of my classes were directly next to and across from each other, forming this nice little triangle with the bathroom right in the middle, but they were my 2nd, 4th, and 6th classes of the day.

Ya. We change classes every semester. We have four periods of regular classes about an hour and 15 minutes long, then a 45 minute long fifth period, which alternates between study hall and two other classes (which are only worth 1/4 of a credit). But some people are saying they might switch to 8-period days, which means more homework...

So a new show called "Arab's Got Talent" has been recently launched over here for the Middle East, and I must say: it is one of the most entertaining shows I've ever watched in a while (besides the new American Idol, which I'm really enjoying). It might be based upon the original American show, but trust me, the cultural differences account for many exciting changes and turns from what we already know. Plus, who wouldn't want to have a good ol' laugh at all the stupid people? xD

It's a snow day today. It's pretty bad out (well, not really so much anymore, but there was like 8 inches of snow last night). Still nothing compared to last year's snowstorm.

Shadow! You need to remake the American Idol thread like you had for season 9.

I'm going to watch last night's episode later but before the one that is on tonight.

Do you live on the East Coast/MD area? Snowmageddon 2010!

In related news, I got about five or so inches of snow last night. No school!

I've barely had any school this week: Monday was school day, Tuesday was the end of the quarter, so teachers did grades, Wednesday was Tri County Orch. rehearsal, and Snow Day today

Yeah.

My week so far:
Monday: Last day of the semester (supposed to have been last thursday)
Tuesday: First day of new classes
Wednesday: Snow day!! It snowed all morning, but I didn't know that until I opened the door to go to school. By the time I found out we didn't have a snow day, I thought, "[expletive] it, I'm not going outside in that weather" and stayed home. My brothers came home at around 1:00-1:30.
Thursday: Snow day!! But so far it's pretty boring...

YOU LUCKY DEVIL. Darn area I'm at doesn't get any snow...

Instead we have the much more rare, more deadly "fire days", but those aren't any fun.

Holy shizzle. There's a huge, strong sandstorm outside right now, and everything turned suddenly darker although it's still around midday. Pretty much every person who was walking tried to shelter somewhere for safety reasons. I hope it subsides quickly instead of it actually becoming hazardous... 0_0

I went yesterday to the optometrist. It turned out that my left eye became worse than before, so I am getting new glasses tomorrow. I was going to do so anyway, since my glasses broke two days ago. I will be posting my new look soon. xD

Just 45 minutes ago, a very strong sandstorm hit the whole place here. It is still in the move, but less wild. I can't really explain it, but out of a sudden, everything turned dark to an extent where you think it is full eclipse. Then huge clouds of dark sand covered the buildings, and everything. Sings, on the streets, fell and flew away. The wind was so strong that our windows start moving constantly, and strongly. Considering that I have to go down and get some important items for my ICT project, I am unlucky. Heh, I just hope it rains extremely heavily after this sandstorm so that the whole city gets drowned and we don't go to school. It has to do so; I am bored! D:

I prefer the DS actually. The only thing that I played for a long time on the Wii was Rock Band/Guitar Hero. On the DS I have played quite a few games (that aren't Pokemon, of course) and spent plenty of time on them.

You have other games which you like and enjoy on the DS. For me (and also Spirit), I only have Pokémon games on the DS, and I'm not particularly interested in many other franchises. Plus, games like Super Mario Galaxy own pretty much every DS title other than Pokémon (where they are at the same level), in my opinion. I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Ah, well I guess the Mario games are ones that IO played a long time along with RB/GH. But really you should try out some other games some time, they're pretty good.

...Well, check out the 360 or PS3. Wii graphics are probably pretty bad compared to those. And the DS is a great handheld, probably better than a PSP.

You're now talking like a Sony fanboy. While I do agree that the PS3 has better graphics and other 'facilities', it doesn't necessarily have better games. Actually, can you please specify what games you meant when you said that? As far as I'm aware, most Wii games received better scores than PS3 games by professional critics, and do not involve blind, stupid shooting at random people every time. Also, the Wii was the first to introduce motion control, after which Sony finally copied the idea and made few titles implementing that. While the Wii does suffer from a pool of bad, unplayable third-party titles, other great games like SSBB and Mario titles in general make up for it.

(I have both consoles and enjoy them greatly, so I know what I'm talking about. I still slightly prefer the Wii, though.)

P.S: this conversation can be continued in the normal debate board. I remember seeing a Wii vs. X-Box vs. PS3 thread over there, but I'm not bothered to look it up right now.

Have you tried playing the Wii on a 50" plasma TV? Each pixel is a sixth of an inch on a TV like that. The DS is at least calibrated perfectly to its own hardware.

Well Jared, I have a 40" TV and that don't look that bad, but I do agree with you. This is the reason that the Wii has bad graphics. Although we should take this to the dabate thread. xD

I accidentally ran over my headphones with the vaccum cleaner, so I got new USB ones.

Plug it in, open winamp. First song (192kbps) sounds like crap. I blame the headphones.

Then I play a song that I ripped at 320kbps. Sounds perfect.

So... these headphones are so HQ that I can pick out all the imperfections of a 192kbps file, which I couldn't do before. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I do know that games will be much more awesome now.

All the electronics I get have mild retardation.

My laptop sometimes comes on immediately after I shut it down.

My iPod Touch (1st gen) can never connect to WiFi.

My A-Jays Earphones have broken thrice in the same year.

FL Studio constantly crashes on me at random times.

My laptop also raegs sometimes when I spam click while browsing the net.

Im pretty sure theres some good creepypasta material in there.

I've tried H&S for a good while before, but it made my hair too soft so that it become hard for me to comb. I'm now using Herbal Essences, and it's been going very well for my hair so far.

Yeah, here are two pictures that show how my hair looks:
This and this. They show my hair perfectly. It is like that almost all the time. They aren't good, I took them in a hurry.

Yeah, it is short, and I love it when it is like that.
Your hair is too short for my preferences. Also, the first picture makes your head look kinda 'lopsided'. I blame the angle of the picture.

Ugh....weather folk are saying its supposed to snow YET AGAIN.

Bad enough almost all my classes the past week were inadvertently canceled and I wasted at least $10 in busfare I didn't have to spend, on top of digging out a car.

That and I have another bad headache.

Are you really sad that you actually missed classes?

We have a Physics and "Theology" test tomorrow. I'm fairly confident about them both, although I'm starting to get sick of the crapload of work which I have to do in the upcoming month. =.=

When you have to commute like I do 2 hours away, you want to be sure you're leaving your house for something productive or something.

American economy is still iffy. Could use that $10 seeing how I don't have lunch packed today.

hai!

Today I had two new classes. I was supposed to have them almost a week ago, but thanks to the crappy weather, I didn't get to take them until now. They're computer programming II (which only had 7 people... that's the smallest class I've ever had) and Pennsylvania and Lancaster County history. Both classes seem pretty cool.

They're saying it's going to snow AGAIN tomorrow. And then it'll turn into freezing rain. I may have a whole two days off. Geez, at this rate, this winter's gonna be way worse than 2010's.
