お話を訊かせていただくということで、
プロデューサーの石原さんと、開発の中心になっている

まず最初に、
DSで２作目の完全新作の『ポケットモンスター』をつくろうという話が
どうやってはじまったかをお訊きしたいのですが、
この話は・・・ディレクターの増田さんに訊くのがいいですよね。

増田

はい。もともと自分のなかには「DSで２作目をつくりたい」、
という気持ちが最初からありました。
DSが世界中でこれほどひろがっているわけですから。

岩田

せっかく１億台以上あるんだから、と。

増田

はい。なので、できればひとり１本遊んでほしいと、
そんな大きな野望を抱きながら、今作をつくりはじめました。

岩田

今回、同じDSで出るとはいっても
前作の→『ダイヤモンド・パール』（※3）をつくったときと、
今回の『ポケモンブラック・ホワイト』をはじめたときとでは、
つくるうえでの基本スタンスが大きく違っていたんじゃないですか？

はい。まず、同じDSなので、同じ見せ方をしたのでは
また同じものになってしまうという危惧がありましたので、
そこは非常に意識しました。
スタッフも含めて自分もそうなんですけど、
ふつうの気持ちでつくろうとすれば、
似たような『ポケモン』になってしまうと思ったんです。

岩田

なまじ馴染んでいるからですよね？

増田

そうなんです。
なので、その意識を変えることからはじめました。

岩田

じゃあ、「DSの『ポケモン』とはこういうものだ」という
みんなのなかにあるイメージを、あえてこの言葉を使いますが、
「どうやったら破壊できるのか？」というところからはじまっているんですね。

増田

はい。やっぱりずっとシリーズをつくってきたなかで
考え方が固定してしまっているんです。
「ポケモンセンターに行ってポケモンを交換するのが当たり前だ」とか、
そういう自分たちのなかにある常識を、一度“破壊”しようと思いました。

岩田

『ポケモン』の長い歴史で積み重ねてきた作法とルールを
これを機会に見なおすことにしたんですね。

増田

そのとおりです。
それに、子どもから大人まで遊んでほしいと思いながら
これまで『ポケモン』をつくってきたんですけど、
どうしても中学生から、高校、大学へと上がっていくと、
ポケモンを“卒業”してしまうケースも少なくなくて、
それがすごく悔しかったんです。
そこで「もし自分だったら、どうすればずっと遊び続けるのか？」
ということをじっくり考えてみたんです。たとえば、
「最先端な要素が入ったら、もうちょっとやっていたのか？」とか、
「ひらがなじゃなくて、漢字にしたらどうだろうか？」といったように、
さまざまな角度からいろいろ見なおしました。

岩田

今回は、→ひらがなだけでなく
漢字モードも選択できるようになりましたね。

増田

やっぱり漢字のほうが読みやすい人もいると思ったんです。

岩田

そんなふうに、いろんな角度から
「どうしたら“卒業”されないものになるか」ということを、
『ダイヤモンド・パール』ができてから、
ゲームフリークのみなさんが→『プラチナ』（※4）をつくっている横で、
増田さんはずっと考えていたわけですね。

はい、２年間くらい、ずっと考え続けていました。
でも『ダイヤモンド・パール』をつくっているときは
そこまで深く考えなくても、DSという
新しいハードでしたから違いを出すことができたんです。

岩田

DSでつくるだけで差が出たんですね。

増田

はい。
ゲームボーイアドバンスと比べて無線機能は断然進化しましたし、
Ｗｉ-Ｆｉ通信も入りましたし、タッチ操作もできると。
でも前作のままの気持ちでつくってしまうと、
やっぱり同じものになってしまうので、
今回は、そこでの意識改革がとても重要だったと思います。

岩田

なるほど。石原さんはプロデューサーですから、
増田さんが「今回はこうしたい」と考えたことを
最初に聞く役目なんですよね？

石原

そうですね、はい。

岩田

一般的に、世の中のプロデュースでは、
「イケてるものはあまり触らずにそのままでいい」というのが
わりと多いパターンですから、
今回「これまでの『ポケモン』を見なおしたい」と言われたとき、
大きく変えようとする意思に対してうれしい気持ちと
大きく変えることに対するドキドキする気持ちとが
プロデューサーとしては混ざりあっていたのではないですか？

石原

でも、僕は圧倒的にうれしい気持ちのほうが強かったですね。
そもそも『ポケモン』はゲームボーイの→『赤・緑』（※5）からはじまって、
ゲームボーイカラーになって、→『金・銀』（※6）が出て・・・。

岩田

ゲームボーイアドバンスになって、
→『ルビー・サファイア』（※7）になって、
DSでは『ダイヤモンド・パール』になりました。

というふうに、完全新作が出るたびに
まったく新しいプラットフォームに乗り移らざるを得ないという、
そういう宿命を背負ってきたのが『ポケモン』なんですけど、
今回は、DSが長寿命で、世界的に普及したことを受けて、
もう１度、DSで新作をつくることができるというのは、
開発にとっては、その資産をうまく活かせるということでもあったんです。

岩田

DSでの開発のノウハウという
『ダイヤモンド・パール』の開発で培った“資産”を、
今回の『ポケモンブラック・ホワイト』に活かせると感じられたんですね。

石原

そうです。
ある種、研究しつくしたものを
新たにもう１回磨き上げることについては、
今回はすごくメリットが多かったと思います。
でも一方で、同じプラットフォームで出すということは、
さっき増田さんが言ったように、
いかに新しく、いかに違うものに仕上げるかというところでの
挑戦がそうとうないと・・・。

岩田

「これだけしか違わないの？」と言われかねないですよね。

石原

そうなんです。
「完全新作と言われてもね・・・」ということになりかねないので、
そのあたりがものすごく心配だったんです。
でも逆に、増田さんから最初の説明を聞いたときは
「こんなに変えちゃうの？」
「本当にできるのかな、これ？」と思ったくらいで・・・。

岩田

百戦錬磨の石原さんでも
「できるのか、これ？」と思ったくらい
変化への踏み込みが激しく大きかったんですね。

石原

そうなんです。

岩田

ちなみに杉森さんは、増田さんから
「今度はこんなのにしたいんだ」と言われたときに、
第一印象はどうだったんですか？

杉森

増田は毎回、「今回はこういうふうにする」という
“所信表明”みたいなことをするんです。

岩田

“所信表明”ですか（笑）。

杉森

ええ。で、いつもその内容が突飛なことが多いんです。

岩田

じゃあ今回も「またか」と思われたわけですね（笑）。

杉森

はい（笑）。

増田

でも今回は、ポケモンが全部新しくなりましたので、
特に杉森は「えっ！？」という感じだったと思います。

杉森

たしかに今回は、ポケモンを全部新しくするというので、
最初は「ええーっ、ちょっと勘弁してくれ」とか
「ちょっとくらい減らせないの？」みたいに言ったりしました。
でも、ちょっとやそっとのことを言ったくらいでは
所信表明したことはほとんど変えないんですよ、この人は（笑）。

岩田

ガンコなんですね（笑）。

増田

ガンコです（笑）。
「ちょっとくらい減らせないの？」と言われても、
（杉森さんの顔をのぞき込みながら）
「そこを、何とか、なんないですかね？」みたいに言って。

杉森

・・・桜井政博さん（※8）という人も、
所信を絶対に変えない感じがしますよね。

岩田

ああ、それはわたしにはわかりやすい説明です（笑）。

「これ、つくります」と見せて、
「え、そんなのつくるの？」とみんなが言うんですけど、
どこかで気が変わるかなと思ったら、最後まで変えませんし。

岩田

そのまま最後まで走りきってつくってしまうんですね。

石原

そうです。だから、みんなついて行くのが大変で（笑）。

増田

事実、そうとう苦労したと思います、今回のスタッフは。
