So I decided to randomly check eBay on a whim when I got home from work. Glad I did, my followed searches just got my best bargain of the year...

Embedded image

See that component cable there? That's really rare and worth $150-300. That auction was up for all of 10 minutes before I bought it. I'm surprised none of the 7 other viewers snapped it up, but hey it worked in my favor.

For those of you wondering why a set of component cables is worth so much, it's because those cables were only available for a limited amount of time (those of you who have seen later release GameCubes may have noticed they lack the Component port on the back). In addition, Nintendo made the encoding chip inside the cable connector itself, so aftermarket manufacturers couldn't replicate it.

Yes I will be keeping the cable, though I'll be re-selling the rest so my total cost for the cable will come to like $10.

I'm at Pokemon Regional Championships in Kansas City. There's a vendor selling Japanese stuff, but what's amazing is that they also have the bags from the Pokemon Center stores. I got a chibi Deoxys plush.

My ~$250 GameCube component cable that I got for $10 arrived today. Works great!

It's hard to tell from online pictures, but it does give a bit of a better picture than using a backwards compatible Wii with component cables.

In other purchasing news I've bought 22 manuals for various games I own (mostly SNES and N64).

I also backed Yooka-Laylee (the GOG.com release), which should come out late next year.

Was the four characters you can have in the first copy not enough?

Stuff I've gotten recently:
  • Traded in that GameCube that came with the component cables for Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble for the SNES.
  • Also backed that Yooka-Laylee on the first day it was available (planning to get Wii U version)
  • Almost all the manuals for all the games I own (only 4 remaining)
  • Oh yeah, also got this sticker for my car a few weeks ago for the PokéPun

Things that I've bought recently? Hmm...

My 10-pound pledge for a digital PC copy for Yooka-Laylee went through, so there's one.

Then, there's 3DMark Advanced Edition and Valkyria Chronicles off Steam sale on the first day (or second). Nice for totalling less than ten dollars. Thanks, local currency! (I think I've basically paid about 5-6 total.)

My backing pledge for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. So excited about that for next year. Pledged enough to get a digital and physical copy so I can't wait.

Waiting to see if GTA V will go on sale on steam to pick that up hope I get lucky.

Pre-ordered Super Mario Maker today. Was kind of amusing, the salesman at Gamestop had no idea about anything Nintendo ("Mario Maker. Is that a video game?"; "our Pokémon cards are on that rack over there" when asked about the Dragonite event") so I'm a little nervous that he might not have even pre-ordered the right game.

edit Oh yeah, this happened also. Nicknames are fun.

Bought a used Performance Super Pad for Super NES and Super Thunder Blade for Sega Genesis, for $8.
Super Thunder Blade, in my opinion, is not the best Sega game, and certainly not the worst; I have definitely played worse Sega Genesis games. XD
I like Super Thunder Blade because it plays like some of Sega's most popular arcade games from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, games like OutRun, After Burner, Hang-On, and Space Harrier. And then when you get into top-down stages, it feels a bit like Raiden, Thunder Force II, Gradius, and other classics. My personal rating is 9.5/10.

And for the Super Pad, I really haven't had the chance yet to try playing Super NES with it, as I just got home from the resale shop. XD
But looking beyond the overall grunge and the two patches of electrical tape on the cord, my first impressions were positive. The controller felt good in my hands, and the buttons didn't feel overly cheap or spongy. It's the perfect, most comfortable no-frills Super NES controller for hands of all sizes, making it a worthy replacement for the cheap-feeling turbo controller I got with my Super NES. It also gives me an excuse to scrap the cheaper-quality controller.

Had to get new shoes today, so figured to pop in on the pawn shop next door to see if they had anything interesting. Had a table with a bunch of clearance items and got this for $20

PDP Mortal Kombat Fight Stick for the PS3. It's a pretty nicely built arcade controller. While is for PS3 it has standard mini-USB connector on it so it can work with PC also (plugged it in and computer detected it automatically, didn't have to install any PS3 drivers or anything).

Should be cool for MAME and other games. Wonder how well it would work with GTA V

Even if I don't use it, it's still selling for $80-100 online so I could make 4X my money back.

This past Saturday, after my Zenith Data Systems computer case broke a zipper, I went to Lands' End's website and bought a new case that was actually on sale for under $50*.

I also picked up a Sony TCM-15V cassette recorder at the resale shop for about $15, after consulting with a client about regaining access to his Facebook and backing up his critical files to a second thumb drive. The cassette recorder seemed to work fine when I was at the shop, despite having extremely weak batteries. In any case, I'll give it a proper evaluation after I give it a good cleaning. When I got home, the new computer case was waiting in a box on my porch.

EDIT: After an hour of meticulous cleaning and reassembly, the tape recorder is good to go. Furthermore, I have developed an adapter that lets me listen to mono audio through both channels instead of just the left channel. The source of the needed parts happened to have been a broken portable DVD player that I've been meaning to scrap for several months.

*"50 bucks?! Now, isn't that nice?" Kudos to those who can guess which commercial this quote is from.

The Amazon Appstore has done away with the FAOTD, and replaced it with a thing called the Amazon Underground, which features over $10000 (!) in free apps, games, and in-app purchases. It costs nothing to use the Underground, so I snagged the Android version of DuckTales Remastered, normally a $10 game, for free.

Yesterday, I had some spare change on hand and ended up buying a used Canon TS-84H pocket calculator for $1 and, for $0.25, the eponymous album (and the only album) by a Canadian band called Sheriff, in cassette format. At checkout, I saw a Super Game Boy in a box full of random cartridges. I came back to the resale shop today with more money, and $10 later, the Super Game Boy became part of my collection. I have yet to fully test it*, but I thoroughly cleaned it right when I got home.

*After an extensive test with my game library, the Super Game Boy works with absolutely no problems; even my GameShark works well on the Super Game Boy. I initially feared that the GameShark/game cartridge combination would get pushed out of the SGB socket when I placed the complete assembly into the Super NES, but I was pleased to see that I had a few 32nds of an inch to spare between the top of the Super NES and top of the game cartridge.

More garage sales! Like usual, I went with Yoshi.

  • Mario Kart DS [Complete] - $6
  • Nintendogs: Chihuahua and Friends (DS) - $6
  • Mystery Case Files: Millionheir + Case (DS) - $6
  • Banjo Tooie + Manual (N64) - Lunch*
  • Wireless Xbox 360 Controller - $7
  • Card Shuffler - $1

*Yoshi found the copy of Banjo Tooie with a beat up box, and he let me take the game and manual in exchange for buying him lunch because he already had it.

He also gave me a bunch of GamePro and Nintendo Power magazines and a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (GBA) demo cartridge.

Went to a few garage sales yesterday, got the following for $1
*PS1 cheat device
*Panic Bomber for Virtual Boy
Should easily resell for a ~$30 profit

Then today all I got was that aforementioned complete Banjo Tooie for $1

Also got these last week. Not gaming related but someone may find them interesting. These are both LEGO items. The left item is a train car. Before LEGO got into manufacturing plastic building bricks, they started out making wooden toys. This car is from 1945, it's 70 years old! Now to find the rest of the train . Item on the right is a small plastic tow truck, a youngin' at only 50-60 years old.

About two weeks ago, I picked up Undertale, after Yoshi badgered me to get it. I highly recommend picking it up and playing through it.

In a nutshell, it's an RPG where you don't have to kill enemies. If you're on the edge, download the demo from the official site and play through that. But DO NOT look up anything else about the game, especially gameplay videos. It's incredibly easy to spoil the game, and that's entirely what the magic of the game is based on.

For Christmas, my parents gave me what seems like their entire VHS collection for me to digitize, so I bought an Elgato Video Capture device for Mac and Windows to bridge the gap between my VCR and my computer(s). It normally runs $120, but I managed to save $40 on it by buying it through Amazon, thus bringing the total down to around $80, plus free shipping. The adapter should arrive between January 5 and January 8.

The capture device opens the opportunity to play analog composite video games using my Mac as a monitor with a slight delay (if any at all), and create legitimate VHS-style videos using my PS2 as a digital video source. Perfect score for a retro video nerd like myself.

Also, for $12 at Big Lots, I picked up a 16 GB memory card, more specifically a Class 10 Micro SDHC card by EMTEC Magnetics, who was known as BASF Magnetics until 1997.

Scored a Logitech WingMan Extreme Digital 3D joystick for $10 at a pawnshop that I've not visited in a while. For a 14-year-old joystick that supports both USB and the old 15-pin Game Port connector, it feels much more solid than the CH Products Flightstick Pro that I bought a few years ago, and the WingMan is a "joy" to use with my favorite flight simulators, be it on my iBook G3, Intel iMac, or my Lenovo laptop. I'll probably write about it soon in my Tech Ramblings thread.

Not really sure what I want to do yet with the Flightstick. Even if it's unusable with any of my computers, I'd like to hang onto it for when/if I ever explore the wonderful world of Raspberry Pi.

EDIT: The FlightStick Pro has been officially retired. I may dismantle it for creating a 3D model of it before giving it back to Goodwill.

My new restoration project is here

Embedded image

A 1976 Atari Super Pong. This model builds on the original Atari Pong home console by providing 4 game-play modes.

Cost was free (+ $9 shipping) as it's untested. Definitely needs a good cleaning, and has some lovely corrosion on the battery terminals. When I get the terminals cleaned I'll fire it up and see what happens.

EDIT: Cleaned up 90% of the corrosion, threw some batteries in, and it works! Picture is fairly weak though (and yes jiggling the cable alters the picture), need to examine the insides but annoying security screws block my path.

My Christmas was rather unexciting, but I got enough money to buy a 1TB XBOX ONE bundle that included Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rare Replay, and Ori and the Blind Forest. I also ordered a custom playmat from Inked Gaming, featuring a Dialga/Palkia fusion. I have also ordered a copy of Puyo Puyo Tetris for the XBOX ONE from Play-Asia. Ignore that black spot in the picture. Something is up with my tablet's camera.

Last week from a random "hole-in-the-wall" thrift store:

SNES console + 1 controller
NES console
Super Mario Sunshine (disk only)

For $20 total. Already sold Mario Sunshine for $30. SNES I got cleaned up real nice, will be on eBay next week after the power supply comes in (so I can sell as complete ready-to-go package) and I remove the discoloration from the system. NES..... gave it away for free because of reasons (WARNING: Most disgusting system I've ever had).

And yesterday I got Duke Nukem: Zero Hour (N64) in almost-like-new condition for $3. Reselling for $10-15.

I once had a DVD drive that I found from a garage sale. It had a roach infestation like that, and of course, the DVD functions of the drive did not work.

Either it gets left in a closet/attic/outside where roaches are and hide in it for a nice dark place, or people who have a roach infestation inside the house the roaches like to crawl inside because nice warm electronics.

For lulz, go back to that AtariAge thread I linked to where I gave away the system. Someone is mad they didn't get it first

Today I picked up Mario and Luigi Dream Team. Liking it so far, it's mostly based off Mario and Luigi with Paper Mario characters thrown into it.

Also got a bit nostalgic for 4th gen Pokemon and wanted to play it again (don't want to erase my original Diamond save). Got a brand new sealed copy of Platinum from eBay for $20.

That, and I have more than enough excess money in my Steam wallet after selling off a good amount of inventory items - and there's still 52 unsold items!

Last week, on my way home from visiting one of my clients for my IT contract work, I stopped in at an antiques shop in downtown Akron. They had a small collection of photo-related stuff in the back of the store, and among the flashbulbs and 35mm cameras I spotted a pack of Imation floppy disks in their original package.

Today, I returned to the antiques shop to see if the disks were still there; much to my delight, they were. I took a look at what was inside the box:
- 21 floppies, even though the box indicated that there were 25 disks... not that having four less disks makes much of a difference.
- Plenty of index labels
- A promotional ad by Imation themselves

After the shop owner finished up with another customer, I handed the disks to him and asked him how much he wanted for them. Two seconds later, he handed them back to me with a smile, saying "Merry Christmas."

This just made my day; I walked to my car with a huge smile on my face and a free box of floppies in my hand. Now, I just need to get out the old ThinkPad and clean up the floppy drive.

This year's spoils of war. If the image isn't clear enough, that's a Mario Kart poster, Chrono Trigger (PEOPLE CAN STOP BUGGING ME ABOUT IT NOW) and Harry Potter HBP for DS, and Harry Potter CoS for GBA. Yes, I more or less officially curate Harry Potter video games now (the ones I have the means to play, anyway). CoS seems to freeze a lot at random intervals, though, so either the game is buggy, the cartridge is buggy or there's now something wrong with my DS's GBA reader. Hopefully I'll still be able to rip the ROM later, though.

Edit: was able to rip or play the ROM fine, Maybe there's dust in the GBA reader or something.

Sooo..... I didn't pay attention to the game when I got it and it turned out to be a bootleg game. Gah I should know better than to accept Pokemon games from the internet without checking them first.

Anyhow got a PROPER LEGIT complete copy for $30 shipped off eBay. Hopefully I can have my save transferred from the bootleg to the proper one so I don't lose the 15 hours I played on it so far.

Effective today, my mother's MacBook Air is suffering a failing 64 GB SSD, so I ordered from Amazon:

- A 128 GB replacement SSD - $190
- iFixit 54-pc driver kit* - $35
- Universal hard drive adapter** - $17

*Ordered this because I will need some "Pentalobe" drivers to get into the MacBook, and as a bonus, I noticed some tri-wing bits in the description which are, of course, a must for opening certain Nintendo devices. Plus, some of the pieces for my older security driver set are missing.

**This is a personal purchase that I've been meaning to make for at least four years... now that the old 20 GB hard disk from my CRT iMac has resurfaced, I figure that this year I could back up the old hard drive and prepare it for recycling. Or maybe prepare it for repurposing.

During my initial tests of the IDE/SATA adapter, I could not get the old IDE hard disk to spin up at all. I initially thought the adapter was faulty, but after taking one of my external hard disks out of its shell and connecting via SATA, I found out otherwise: the SATA drive spun up and the drive's icon appeared in the My Computer window, all with no difficulty. I have yet to try the 2.5" IDE connector but for now, I'll have to figure out what to make with the old IDE hard disk's mechanical parts.

EDIT: On a further note, I borrowed the hard drive from my ThinkPad so that I could test two connectors in one go: the 40-pin ATA connector on the USB IDE/SATA interface, and a little adapter that I found in my parts bin, which allows a 44-pin 2.5" ATA drive to be used where only a 40-pin 3.5" ATA bus is available. The adapter has standard Molex power connector, but it only feeds 5 volts to the adapter instead of both 5 and 12. Needless to say, the ThinkPad's hard disk showed up just fine in the My Computer window on my Lenovo, despite having been fed through a series of adapters.

Conclusion: $17 was money well spent on a universal hard disk adapter that works out of the box and without the need for any special drivers.

About $23 of thrifting got me a second Sony PlayStation 2, a Daewoo VCR/DVD combo unit, and an Aiptek digital camcorder to add to my camera collection.

At the time of this writing, all the items have not been cleaned or tested, but initial in-store tests show that the VCR/DVD is at least in working order. Besides, there is currently a rainstorm that forbids me from unloading the car.

EDIT: The VCR portion of the VCR/DVD combo works fine, although I can't seem to get the DVD portion to read any of my discs, a problem which I will address later. Fortunately, the PS2 and camcorder works with no problems, aside from the fact the PS2 needed a new clock battery. The camcorder died of solder point shorting during my attempt to make a couple mods to it. I'm disappointed that I couldn't fix it, but then again, I only paid a buck for it, so no hard feelings. It could be worse: I could have ruined a more expensive camera.

Not directly video gaming related, but it's Pokemon, I haven't posted here in a while, and this is the only place I can gloat about my latest bargain

So anyhow, I've been collecting Pokemon cards (100% Cat's fault by the way). While browsing eBay a few days ago, I got this lot of Charizards for $200

Pic in here

Embedded image
  • Charizard (Arceus 1)
  • Charizard (Legendary Treasures 19)
  • Charizard EX (Flashfire 11) * 5
  • Charizard EX (Flashfire 12) * 2
  • M Charizard EX Y (Flashfire 13) * 2
  • M Charizard EX X (Flashfire 69) * 2
  • Charizard EX (Flashfire 100) * 2
  • M Charizard EX Y (Flashfire 107)
  • M Charizard EX X (Flashfire 108)
  • Charizard EX (XY Promo 17)
  • Charizard EX (XY Promo 29)
  • Dialga EX (Phantom Forces 122)
That's like $400 worth of Pokemon cards here. I'm keeping the Mega EX 107 and 108 for my collection, everything else is duplicate I'll resale to not only get my money back but get a nice $100 profit out of

While I was shopping before my weekly meeting with a client, I scored an Apple QuickTake 150 camera and its respective Mac-only Mini DIN-8 serial cable for $10. Other than a very thin, easily-cleanable layer of battery acid buildup on the battery terminals, the camera is in very good, working condition. Although I no longer own a classic Mac to transfer photos to, I have found a wiring diagram to convert the double-ended Mini DIN-8 cable to the standard DB-9 serial interface, which would effectively allow me to transfer any photos to my ThinkPad. It's awesome to have yet another piece of Apple Computer history in my collection.

On the way out of the antiques shop, I picked up a late 1970s/early 1980s General Electric stereo AM/FM/8 Track deck to get a better look at it, and immediately the shop owner offered it to me for free, because he said it didn't work. I told him that I would think about it while I was finishing my errands, and the deck was still there, right where I left it. When I brought it home, I found that the problem lied within the AC in on the back of the unit; the 1000-microfarad regulation capacitor seemed to have failed. I will consider using a switching power supply to get the unit to at least power on. I'm not really worried about getting the 8-track player to work, because I'll more than likely convert that into a stereo line-in, for things that use headphones.

Boy, would it make an awesome "future-retro" boombox.

Just a heads up if you use a switch mode supply you may get high pitch noise. Just replace the caps there super cheap, and some basic soldering skills.

And if thats not it it shoudl be very easy to fix shoudl have all common/cheap parts. for that age. Also that post needs pics

I'll see if I have any spare 1000-microfarad capacitors laying around, and if I do, I'll see if I can swap them out and at least get the original power supply working. If I can't, then I'll see about doing a full replacement.

I'll also get on the photo project when there's daylight, and when my client's next wave of paperwork is finished. I promise you that.

As promised, I've gotten around to taking a picture of Monday's plunder.

Photo Apr 26, 4 15 44 PM.jpg

At the time of this writing, I have already built a homemade, PC-compatible transfer cable (out of the cable shown) for the QuickTake 150, and I've been very unsuccessful at trying to get the ThinkPad to cooperate with the camera; I even quintuple-checked my wiring, which was fine, and yet still made my ThinkPad hang up when I powered the camera on. So, the next thing on the list is looking into a USB-to-DB9 serial adapter and trying to use my homemade link with Windows XP via VirtualBox or VMWare. Until then, the QuickTake 150 sits on display next to my working stereo. The camera works fine; I just can't transfer any photos for the time being.

Being the retro audio nerd that I am, I found a pair of Koss K/6X Plus "Digital Ready" headphones for about $3 at a thrift store. For a 31-year-old pair of headphones, I thought they'd be either completely dead or partially working, but after testing them, I found out otherwise; much to my delight, it works perfectly with crisp treble and punchy bass. I looked the headset up on eBay, and apparently they want no less than $10 for the same model, so my score was most definitely a bargain.

They could stand to be cleaned but fortunately, the grunge seems so light that I wouldn't need half of a roll of paper towels to clean the headset with. Not bad for a pair of headphones that precede my birth by one year.

My most recent purchase was Skylanders: Superchargers for the Wii. I bought it on Amazon yesterday, so it should be here sometime tomorrow. I have never played a Skylanders game, but it was only 15 dollars on Amazon so I figured that I will give the series a try. Even if I do not like the game, I am still getting a cool Bowser figure (It is also an Amiibo), the Clown Cruiser, and a random alien Skylanders.

Purchase-wise, here's what I've been up to during the past two months:

June 2016
- Journey's "Infinity" album from 1977, in CD format - $5

- Zootopia on DVD - $20

- Thrift store finds:

- A Sony boom box from around 1987 - $5
- Logitech 3D Extreme Pro joystick* - $3
- Gran Prix (GPX) personal AM/FM/cassette player - $0.50
July 2016
- Copal MG-111 flip clock timer from the mid-1970s - tagged as $50, but I traded in my 1970s 35mm camera for it, since it's becoming more and more expensive (for my budget) to be able to use the camera.

- Sony MDR-ZX110AP headphones - $25. These will be replacing the Koss headphones as well as the previous pair of Sony headphones whose right speaker went out.

- $6 in quarters bought me an unusual walkman, which looks like a novelty item straight out of mid-1980s pop culture:

Picked up Monster Hunter Generations a couple days ago. Boy do I love me a good MH game. It's pretty cool to see games in the style of this. It revisits old villages and brings back old characters. It's got plenty of new to introduce too. I've probably spent too much time into it already.

Funtastic Nintendo 64 - Clear Blue+White (like this)

This color combination was only available in Japan and Europe. I wanted to get one of the cool Funtastic colored systems to move my RGB video output modded system into (replacing it's standard gray one in fairly beat up and scratched condition). Found this on eBay from Japan for $40 shipped (which is a lot cheaper then even broken systems here in the US), including both expansion port covers (almost every system on eBay seems to be missing these....) along with Japanese copies of Mario Party 3 and Mario Golf 64.

A PS1 copy of Metal Gear Solid, a Metal Gear Rising themed bifold wallet, a Super Mario Galaxy soundtrack CD, a GTX 650ti and an 120GB ssd. SSD was absolutely worth it. Working on trying to get a better PC case and some thermal paste.

I'd already preordered mine a few weeks ago.
